I always keep it real with you, and today is no different. This week’s newsletter is a little different, too. What I’m about to share might feel uncomfortable, but it’s important — not just for me, but for all independent artists working hard to make it. I never could have predicted how successful NakedPastor would become. Despite the love and support I receive, the reality is that being an independent artist is still tough. Passion and drive can only take you so far — real support is what helps us cross the finish line. But, algorithms make it harder. A big following doesn’t always mean big success. Because my cartoons are controversial and get the most engagement (and negative comments), social media algorithms assume that’s all people want to see. This means my other work — like my Sophia series or my gallery wall set — gets buried. Last year, I put so much love into those pieces, and barely anyone saw them. The algorithm must think, “What’s this contemplative art got to do with these controversial cartoons?!” With a following of 133k on Instagram, you’d think my posts would be flooded with likes, shares, and comments — but that’s not always the case for so many creators. My engagement rate is 0.66%. Crazy, I know! |
