| DECEMBER 18, 2024 Hey y’all! As I’ve been hinting at, I’ve been helping Geof with some research on something you’ll see sometime next month. Can’t spill the beans just yet, but… it’s freaking awesome!!! (Although if you just can’t wait to get your Geof Smith fix — and who could blame ya! — he’s gonna be LIVE tomorrow… check this out!) Now, here’s a weird thing about me… I absolutely love research! No, that’s not a joke. I don’t know if it’s the former English Major and Political Scientist in me, or if it’s the know-it-all tendencies taking center stage… either way, when I’ve got my head down, trying to find the solution to a problem in a book, a scholarly journal, or even on ChatGPT… there’s something kinda electrifying about it. Ok I don’t know what’s going on there… is that Grease? I assume it’s Grease… I’ll have to watch it and report back. Anyway, back to my point: I love reading. I love research. I love writing down arguments that solve problems. Those are the reasons I was an English and Political Science major. They’re a big part of the reason I went to Seminary, too! Translating a word in ancient Hebrew to make a closing argument in your sermon? Absolute chef’s kiss! 👨🍳 😘 But that’s where you run into problems… You know, the old adage? “There’s no money in being an English Major!” Ok maybe that’s not an “adage,” per se, but I heard it a lot. And it’s a fair point. Most people who really love English programs become English teachers or English professors. And those are fine careers, but they’re not “vacation whenever you want” kinda careers. Still, I followed what I wanted to do. I knew I couldn’t be a math major or a computer programmer… not unless I wanted an express trip to the psych ward! And if you’d told me about the stock market back then, chances are I would have written that off, too… After all, in my head, I thought anyone who traded stocks had to be a numbers wizard or an economic expert! But after seminary, I wasn’t finding a job in a church right away, and a friend reached out about starting as a part-time blogger for his financial website… I didn’t know one single useful thing about the stock market, but I knew I could research things, learn the basics, and write an article about them. And that’s what I did for months until… well, the markets sort of started to make sense… it was honestly a little scary! Over time, I got to know the markets better and better, and the deeper I went, the more interesting they became. That’s still true, by the way! There is so much more I want to explore and learn about. But even still, as I learned more about the market, I kind of barred myself from actually becoming a “trader.” After all, I had to be rich to start that, right? And I still had to be a math wizard? But folks… none of that’s true! And while I’ve only just started to dip my toes into the waters of the stock market, I really think it will be an obsession of mine for the rest of my life. And it’s not because I love math or know a ton about stock reports. It’s because the kind of logical problem-solving that I always loved in every other context is just as beneficial in the stock market! Maybe even more so! Because while writing a 2,000-word essay about the symbolism of swimming trout in Cormac McCarthy’s The Road (something I actually did) might be a lot of fun (to me)... The old “adage” is right: there ain’t much money in that. But when someone asks you to do some digging into his strategy for targeting $200 every morning the market opens and you get to figure out how and why that works? Well… that’s a different story. Oops! I guess I let a little bit more on Geof’s strategy slip out… but that’s it for now. You’ll have to wait a while for the other juicy details! Hope you’re having a good Wednesday!
