Good morning, and welcome to the Tuesday, Nov. 14 edition of the Saints Insider newsletter. The Saints are on bye this week, but the news is not. Let's get to it. The dreaded middleAfter their latest disappointing loss, the Saints are 5-5 heading into the bye week. With 10 games of supporting evidence, that feels just about right. In columnist Jeff Duncan's opinion, these 2023 Saints might as well serve as the textbook definition of mediocrity — not great at anything, not terrible at anything either. At this point, Duncan wrote, "it’s fair to say the best thing the Saints have going for them is they play in the lowly NFC South, which is essentially the NFL's version of the Group of Five." Injury updatesYou never want to hear the words "fairly significant" to describe an injury, and yet that's what coach Dennis Allen used to describe what two of the Saints best players are dealing with at the moment. Beat writer Matthew Paras takes stock of where the Saints stand on the injury front after what might've been a costly loss to the Vikings. New pass rusher coming? The Saints have struggled to get much of anything going while rushing opposing quarterbacks, and they might've taken a step toward rectifying that Monday. New Orleans worked out a former NFC South foe in Jason Pierre-Paul, and the veteran pass rusher seems to think he is primed to wear a Saints uniform. Matthew Paras has the story. This Saints Insider's take: This feels like a bandaid on a larger problem, and I'm not sure the 34-year-old Pierre-Paul (5.5 sacks in his last 26 games) is going to suddenly turn back the clock and be a game-changing rusher. But it's worth a shot, because what the Saints had been doing wasn't working. We've got a lot more for you over at nola.com, and we'll have a lot more coming this week while the Saints regroup and get ready for the last seven games of the regular season. Thanks as always for following along. Cheers, Luke Johnson |
