The real issues facing America’s Social Security program

 

The recently released Social Security Trustees report shows that the program will no longer be able to make all of its promised benefit payments by 2034, and future deficits between scheduled payroll tax revenue and program expenditures are large and growing.

 

Gopi Shah Goda and Lily Nevo outline Social Security’s financial shortfall and explain why efforts to curb waste, fraud, and abuse won’t be enough to ensure the program can continue delivering essential benefits to retirees, survivors, and disabled Americans well in the future.
