Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs) were recognized in the Top 10 Emerging Technologies of 2024 report, co-published by the World Economic Forum and the scientific publisher Frontiers, as a transformative innovation poised to significantly influence society and address critical global issues. The Innovator interviewed one of the contributing researchers to the Emerging Technologies report, PET expert Lisette van Gemert-Pijnen, Professor, Persuasive Health Technology, University of Twente in the Netherlands, and has conducted its own reporting as part of a collaboration between The Innovator and Frontiers. The series aims to help executives get an early glimpse of scientific and technological developments and put them into context for business.

Joanna Lenkova, Futurist
 
Who: Joana Lenkova is a futurist who focuses on merging foresight with a company’s strategic imperative. She is currently Futurology Director at the LEGO Group.  Lenkova’s background is in strategy, innovation and brand building. She was trained as a futurist while working for The Walt Disney Company in the UK and Ireland. After leaving Disney she founded Futures Forward, a London-based consultancy specialized in innovation, strategy and foresight. She is currently writing a book about using strategic foresight tools and practices in decision making to create an action plan around future scenarios.

Dutch scale-up Roseman Labs specializes in Multi-Party Computation, an encryption technology that allows encoded data to be shared and analyzed without the raw data being directly accessible. Customers include the Netherlands’ National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), university hospitals, the Dutch government and financial institutions.

Amount of money added to the market caps of Schneider Electric, Siemens AG, ABB and Legrand -four of Europe’s oldest industrial groups - on the back of soaring demand for data centers driven by the boom in artificial intelligence, according to an article this week in the Financial Times. European makers of everything from switches to smart meters are providing the servers and infrastructure that power data centers for large language models and Cloud computing, with traditional makers of electric equipment such as Legrand doubling their revenues thanks to data centers in recent years. The groups are continuing their traditional business but data centers are their fastest-growing source of revenue, driven by the volume of computing power required by AI models, as well as gaming, Cloud computing and streaming.

In the latest World Economic Forum Chief Economist Outlook report nearly half (46%) of chief economists said they expect AI to deliver a modest global real GDP boost of 0-5 percentage points over the next decade, with a further 35% projecting gains of 5-10 points.. Despite its potential, concerns persist: 47% expect net job losses over the next decade, compared to just 19% who expect gains. Respondents highlighted the misuse of AI for disinformation and societal destabilization as the top risk to the economy (53%). Other key risks include rising concentration of market power (47%) and disruption of existing business models (44%).
