THE BIG STORY A Saudi military trainee killed three people in Florida in a shooting at a Navy base
Three people were killed and eight others injured on Friday when a trainee from the Saudi Arabian Air Force opened fire at the Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida. The incident was one of two shootings at a naval base last week — at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in Hawaii, a shooter believed to be a US sailor killed two Defense Department employees and injured a third before killing himself. There's no suggestion the two incidents are linked. Officials said the Pensacola shooter was studying in the naval aviation program. The FBI is investigating, including whether the shooter acted alone or as part of a network to plan the attack that is now presumed to be terrorism. Authorities have identified the victims in Florida as Joshua Kaleb Watson, 23, Mohammed Sameh Haitham, 19, and Cameron Scott Walters, 21. Here’s everything we know about them. A DECADE OF DEVASTATION This was the decade drug overdoses killed nearly half a million Americans
It’s hard to wrap your mind around the sheer scale of damage that drug overdoses have done to the US this decade. The overdose epidemic has overtaken both car crashes and gun violence as leading causes of deaths nationwide, and it now causes far more deaths every year than AIDS did at its peak. US drug overdose deaths in this decade exceed the number of battle deaths the country suffered in World War I and World War II combined. Dan Vergano looks back at the decade and what we learned from reporting on drug overdose deaths: “The ‘war on drugs’ rhetoric of the last 50 years finally ended amid all those deaths, which brought the realization that we can’t arrest away the disease of drug addiction, a change that noticeably came with a drug epidemic ravaging white, rural America.” Pill Man, a skeleton made from Frank Huntley's oxycontin and methadone prescription bottles, is seen in front of the White House on Aug. 30. Remember last week, when we talked about how deeply concerned people were about the woman in a vaguely dystopian ad for the Peloton exercise bike? Well, there’s a plot twist. After the Peloton ad went viral last week, the actor, Monica Ruiz, turned up in an ad for the Ryan Reynolds-owned gin company, Aviation Gin. In it, Ruiz downs a drink, looking like she has emerged from a rough situation. Reynolds cheekily tweeted the ad, adding “exercise bike not included.” People are loving the clapback so much.
