With the massive explosion in Beirut still reverberating around the Middle East, plenty of people outside Lebanon but in the region wonder if the fatal cocktail of corruption, cruelty, mismanagement, opacity and the derision with which political elites regard civilian lives will come for them next. David Daoud explores how the explosion could lead to Lebanon’s implosion.
Another explosive situation is developing on the Israel-Gaza border, as Qatar – now committed to $50 million in aid to Lebanon – seems set on cutting the cash deliveries which have kept Hamas and ordinary Gazans afloat. As Muhammad Shehada explains, when the aid ends and no other Gulf state takes its place, a military escalation will be unavoidable. Eric Yoffie marks 15 years since Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza, and the lessons not yet learnt by the colonialist right and the naïve left.
China is flexing its geopolitical and economic wings all over the globe, and South Asia is no exception. Mohamed Zeeshan calls on India to let China poach Iran, not long ago New Delhi’s close associate, and to pivot towards the U.S. and Israel instead.
Sumeera Asghar Roy and Hassan F. Virk note that China is not offering Pakistan the crucial water and agricultural technologies it needs to keep Pakistanis alive – but Israel has that expertise. They suggest Islamabad should ditch its failed hostility towards Israel.
As Beijing courts internationally, it continues its brutal repression of the Uighur Muslim minority. Fiyaz Mughal asks why UK Muslims are so reticent in their denunciations of what has been termed genocide, in contrast to the louder activism of UK Jewish communities.
Una Hajdari offers a piercing analysis of how nations rebuild after genocide, centering the example of Bosnia’s Muslims, targeted by the worst atrocities seen in Europe since the Holocaust.
And George Newhouse and Steven Castan remind us of a forgotten moment in Australian Jewish history: the principled stance of indigenous leaders who marched in protest against Kristallnacht in 1939, and enjoins Australian Jews to back the same moral imperative in standing up for Black and indigenous lives.
