It’s now more than 13 years since Madeleine McMann disappeared while on holiday in Portugal. Yesterday we heard of the biggest potential breakthrough in the case yet, with a new suspect, but today it was sadly followed by news that German prosecutors believe Madeleine to be dead. We have the latest details on who the suspect is here.
The protests over the death of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer have spread around the world, including to London. Britain’s capital is no stranger to racial tension, as Alex Wheatle knows well. The novelist and lecturer, who was imprisoned after taking part in the Brixton Riots, writes in this powerful piece about how racism persists in our own country and how those outside the black community can help make this moment a true turning point.
Finally, in 1981 New York was in the throes of urban decay and suburban flight after more than a decade of misfortune. As part of efforts to turn the city around, a philanthropic organisation reached out to Art Garfunkel about performing in Central Park. Ian Winwood recounts the fascinating tale of how that concert morphed into a giant reunion gig that ended up tearing Simon & Garfunkel apart.
