The Front Page: COVID deaths march on, let Elsa go and a salute to potholes

By Drew Broach | Deputy metro editor

DEATH MARCH: The crisis may be over. But three months after safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines were first made available to anyone who wants them, the death rate remains stubbornly high in some parts of Louisiana. One of them is Lake Charles.

LET ELSA GO: Tropical Storm Elsa weakened slightly Monday as it delivered heavy rain to western Cuba and headed toward Key West, Florida. Forecasters said the fifth named storm of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season would ride up the Florida Gulf Coast before making U.S. landfall on Wednesday.

'HAIL, POTHOLES!' The Mystic Krewe of Conus, the newest Mardi Gras season marching group in New Orleans, took to the steamy streets of the French Quarter on Monday afternoon, leapfrogging from one watering hole to another as it satirized New Orleans’ current plague of potholes and road construction. (We can't make this stuff up.)

All this and much more are in today’s Front Page and on NOLA.com. Thanks for starting your day with us.
