Updated ground gas standard now available
BS 8485:2015, Code of practice for the design of protective measures for methane and carbon dioxide ground gases for new buildings
gives recommendations on ground gas site characterization and the choice of solutions for the design of integral protective measures for new buildings to prevent entry of carbon dioxide and methane, and provide a safe internal environment. It helps to identify the risks posed by the potential or actual presence of carbon dioxide and methane, and that they have been addressed.
The standard is a key piece of guidance for consultants for the design of investigations and gas protection measures for new developments, and regulators (environmental health officers and building control) who need to assess/approve foundation designs. It provides a framework, in line with Model procedures for the management of land contamination, CLR 11
, which guides designers about what is required for an adequate ground gas site investigation.

Material efficiency of energy-related products
What are the impacts of material efficiency on energy-related products? BSI needs your view
The European Commission are drafting a revised Standardization Request (SR) to support the Ecodesign Directive, promoting increased material efficiency of energy-related products.
The products covered by this SR are truly diverse and any product that consumes energy could be affected raising questions about operational and safety impacts.
As the SR itself is unlikely to change any further at this point, BSI needs the views of UK stakeholders to inform our vote on the next iteration of this European ballot.
