The joy of naturism

In 2022 the biggest survey ever into naturism found 14% of people in the UK now describe themselves as naturists or nudists: an estimated 6.75 million – or one in seven people. The findings by polling firm Ipsos represented a huge increase on previous figures and showed that – far from its traditional image as a niche pastime for retirees – it was actually younger people who were embracing the freedoms of naturism.
This resurgence of interest perhaps explains the huge popularity of our recent feature on the “clothing optional” Île du Levant, which has proved to be one of our most widely read travel stories. If you’ve ever been tempted to dip a toe into naturism, there’s no better place to try it than this idyllic car-free island off the coast of Provence. The island is home to the Domaine Naturiste d’Heliopolis, a “rustic Eden” which has been luring naturists for 93 years.
“On every visit, I’ve found that when people shed their clothes, they shed their pretence,” writes Alexis Steinman, who first visited when she was 20 and has returned many times since. And if you’re nervous about taking the plunge, it’s perfect as, “unlike traditional naturist retreats where nudity is de rigueur, Héliopolis is peppered with clothing-optional spots”. Furthermore, France is the world’s leading naturist destination, welcoming 2.6 million visitors a year at naturist clubs, beaches or campsites, so you’ll be in good company.
