Forecast called for rain and Packers tears |
It was a tense first quarter for the Detroit Lions as they trailed behind the Green Bay Packers 0-3. Then in the second quarter, they lost Brian Branch, who was ejected for a helmet-to-helmet hit. The breakout safety then got hit with another unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after throwing up two middle fingers on his way out. But the Lions quickly regained control, played great and cruised to a 24-14 win on Sunday at a rain-soaked Lambeau Field. The Lions have become the bully in one of the oldest rivalries in professional football. And with first place on the line against the second-place Packers, they solidified their place as one of the best. |

When it comes to the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election, residents are not only split on their candidate of choice -- they vary on which issues hold the most weight for them. While covering dozens of political rallies across the state, MLive reporters asked residents which issues were most important to them. Among the most popular answers were the economy, abortion access, immigration, foreign relations, LGBTQ rights and climate change. Four years ago, about 3.3 million Michigan residents cast their vote via absentee ballot in the November presidential election. This year, many residents are still choosing to vote ahead of Election Day, with more than 2.5 million people having already cast their ballots as of Friday, Nov. 1. The latest: The U.S. Department of Justice will be monitoring six Michigan communities during the Nov. 5 general election to ensure they’re in compliance with federal voting rights laws. |

November weather in Michigan: Just exactly what is normal? |
Michigan weather is often anything but normal. We know we'll gradually lose the heating power from the sun as the month progresses. The sun sits lower on the horizon with each day up to around December 21. Here are the 30-year average high and low temperatures to start and end November. Severe drought now covers almost half of Michigan. Rain amounts that should help are underway. We will have three rounds of rain rolling across Michigan through early Wednesday. The rain total will be heaviest north and west, which is where the drought is most severe. To know: November is the deadliest month for shipwrecks on the Great Lakes, from Edmund Fitzgerald to Daniel J. Morrell and Rouse Simmons – and many others. Despite the harsh storms of November, ships would often have overloaded cargo holds for the final trip of the year. |

‘Mind boggling’ amount of money flowing into Michigan’s toss-up U.S. Senate race |
Michigan’s U.S. Senate race between Democrat Elissa Slotkin and Republican Mike Rogers has been awash in ads, fueled by what one longtime political observer called a “mind boggling” amount of spending. As of mid-October, the two candidates had pumped $52.4 million into the race, according to figures compiled by OpenSecrets, a nonpartisan group that tracks money in politics. The figure climbs even higher when including outside spending, which OpenSecrets tallied at $138.2 million. ‘I love Gen Z’: Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris held her last Michigan rally Sunday, Nov. 3, at Michigan State University. Harris targeted her speech toward younger voters. On the other side: Republican candidate former President Donald Trump is planning to hold his final rally for his 2024 presidential campaign today in Grand Rapids. This will mark the third time Trump has ended his presidential campaigns in Michigan’s second-largest city. |

Savannah Bananas ticket lottery at 89K fans for Grand Rapids games as deadline passes |
Play ball: The hype around next summer’s Banana Ball World Tour stop in West Michigan has drawn out nearly 90,000 fans. 89,200 registered for a chance to see the Savannah Bananas’ Party Animals play the Firefighters for three wild nights of Banana Ball on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, June 12-14, at LMCU Ballpark in Comstock Park, a suburb of Grand Rapids. In college football: The Michigan Wolverines suffered their second home loss of the season Saturday, falling to 5-4 after No. 1-ranked Oregon came to town. Indiana scored 47 unanswered points to run away for a 47-10 win on Saturday against Michigan State, who lost starting quarterback Aidan Chiles to injury in the third quarter. A miracle: A runner died during the annual Grand Rapids Marathon. Three strangers came together and brought him back to life. |

One of Michigan’s most-visited parks reopens after $2.95M upgrades |
'Up north feel': To update roads and sidewalks, beach parking lots and restrooms, Island Lake Recreation Area has been closed for six weeks. The park in Livingston County received $2.95 million of American Rescue Plan Act money and reopened to vehicle traffic on Saturday. Discovering history: A time capsule from 1921 was found inside a cornerstone brick last week at a National Guard base in Northern Michigan.
