| WHY THIS MATTERS: Transitioning the oversight of the internet address system to an independent, multinational group would represent a good symbolic step forward, in part because it would be just thatsymbolic. Fears of foreign predations on the IANAs non-regulatory status are not baseless, as many regimes would seek to control information if at all possible. But at the end of the day, the IANA simply wouldnt have that power, which is a small, but refreshing victory for an open internet. Garen Sahagian |
