With Luke Johnson The football gods apparently took one look at this New Orleans Saints team that has been decimated by injury and said, You know what, let's give them even fewer players. Monday, the Saints learned they'd be without their leading receiver, Deonte Harris, for the next three games. They also learned one of their best defensive players, Cam Jordan, landed on the reserve/COVID list after a positive test. Sure, why not! The Saints at least figured the Harris news was coming down the pipeline at some point soon. The receiver and kick returner was arrested this offseason for driving under the influence, and the suspension loomed over him for much of the season. Harris appealed what was effectively a foregone conclusion last month, which gave the Saints at least one playmaker on their offense while several others missed time to injury, but the NFL handed down its final judgment Monday. Here's everything you could possibly want to know on the topic. The Jordan news was a surprise though. The Saints All-Pro defensive end tested positive Monday morning, according to a source, and though he is currently asymptomatic he could be in line to miss a game for the first time in his 11-year career. Jordan, who is vaccinated, will have to submit two negative tests before the team departs for New York this weekend. New Orleans could certainly use him, as three of its top edge rushers (Tanoh Kpassagnon, Marcus Davenport and Payton Turner) have all missed time recently with injury. But hey, it's not all bad news! Even after losing five straight, there is still a path to the playoffs for this team. And, if you'd rather look forward to next year, you can check out where they'd be picking in the 2022 draft — all of that and more in this piece by my colleague Amie Just. We've only got five more weeks of the NFL regular season to look forward to. As always, thank you for following along to this point. - Luke |
