By Drew Broach | Deputy metro editor THE GREEN ROOM IS SMOKIN': After a way-too-long pandemic hiatus, Carnival normalcy seemed to return to New Orleans on Thursday. The Krewe of Joan of Arc oiled its armor for the season's first parade, a walking procession in the French Quarter, and the Phunny Phorty Phellows chilled the Champagne to lubricate the group's Twelfth Night streetcar ride down St. Charles Avenue. And everywhere, upper lips were glistening with sugary frosting from 2022’s first batch of king cakes. Also check out the complete New Orleans Carnival parade schedule and the plans for a second year of the delightful Krewe of House Floats. GOT MILK? Children’s meals at New Orleans restaurants must come with a healthy drink by default, under a new City Council ordinance that’s aimed at reining in childhood obesity but drew objections from the restaurant lobby. The new law requires eateries to offer water, milk or a juice drink if they have children’s meals, and allows soft drinks only if kids and parents go off menu. SPECIAL TEAM DELIVERY: Those clever Saints on Thursday sent a king cake to Thomas Morstead, the team's former punter and a New Orleans fan favorite who now plays for the rival Atlanta Falcons ... whom the Saints happen to face in Sunday's regular season finale. "Wishing you and your family a Happy Carnival Season!" the note with the cake said. "Here's to hoping you set a career high in punts on Sunday, Old Friend!" The good-natured Morstead responded by tweeting a picture of himself, the cake and the note with the caption "Touché @saints." Thanks for starting you day with us. Hard to explain that one, readers. |
