Welcome to a new week.
After surveying the global 5G scene for the latter part of 2020, one thing has become glaringly obvious. The big issue for new 5G users - and let's face it we're all new - is coverage..
Except for perhaps, the biggest cities in China - Shenzen, Shanghai et al - most parts of the world, simply do not have 5G coverage. And that is especially the case in the English speaking countries of the world, despite the promises and rhetoric being uttered by the biggest telecoms operators.
In this issue, we take a look at Australia as a case in point.
Meanwhile over in the US, the battle rages on over nationalisation of 5G and the Pentagon seeking to establish its own commercial 5G network.
With the demise of Huawei in the West as far as 5G is concerned at least, the alternatives for the US and elsewhere have been touted as Nokia and Ericsson. Yet there are some suggestions that best alternative may actually be Samsung.
Back in Australia, the hottest stock in the telecoms and data centres space at the moment appears to be Macquarie Telecom (ASX:MAQ). Last week, it gained a major new tenant to its latest and fourth data centre in Sydney and as a result its stock has soared to an all time high. In fact over the past five years the company hasn't taken a backward step with a share price gain of more than 600%.
Back in the US, Dish continues building its open standards 5G network with an announcement that it is partnering with 5G semiconductor kingpin Qualcomm.
Telstra, Australia's largest telecoms operator, has announced a major restructure, effectively splitting the company into three. Will it work and return the company to growth?
We also take a look at the burgeoning market for 5G and IoT in buildings, with a couple of stories from japan and Europe.
