WHISTLEBLOWER SUITS: Two trials got underway Monday involving law enforcement employees who say they were fired for drawing attention to misdeeds at work. In Orleans Parish, a sheriff's office investigator said his probe into a jailed arsonist’s frequent escapes to visit a girlfriend in Gentilly got him fired. On the north shore, the former No. 2 to St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith claims he was fired for his insistence that a deputy stealing drugs at traffic stops should be handled as a criminal matter. The employers of both men disagree.
