A rising number of skilled cooks are preparing gefilte fish and pastrami, but doing it their way. Shtetl cuisine was incredibly varied, depending on where one lived or their economic status. For many Ashkenazi Jews, the food of Yiddishland was typified by gefilte fish, chopped liver, stuffed goose neck, chicken soup with noodles, cholent and kugel. These foods, once ubiquitous in delis and kitchen tables in cities across the United States, have changed over time, meeting the tastes of younger generations and the increasing diversity of Jewish households. So, what does Yiddish cooking look like today? Who are some of the people at the forefront of this movement? And more importantly, where can you find some recipes to recreate these dishes? |

A conversation with the two of the editors of the oldest and most influential Jewish publications in the United States Join Jodi Rudoren, editor-in-chief of the Forward and Arielle Angel, editor-in-chief of Jewish Currents in a wide-ranging discussion on the state of American Jewish media. They will discuss ways each publication balances uniquely Jewish perspectives in a medium beholden to the impartiality of journalistic ethics, the pitfalls and power of public opinion writing and the density of intellectual and historical discourse. Does the “Jewish” of their titles refer to their approaches to the work or their audience? How do they ensure the integrity of their publications’ missions while juggling Israel and US politics, Jewish communal politics, and antisemitism? How is their work informed by a historical understanding of American Jewish communities? |
