Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
The Five

Fox’s late-afternoon roundtable The Five was the most-watched show in all of cable on Friday.

That means beating out regular winners Tucker Carlson and Rachel Maddow, which is no mean feat.

According to Nielsen data, The Five won the most viewers Friday, with 2.78 million, and was third in the demo, with 360,000. Tucker Carlson Tonight was a close second in both total viewers, with 2.73 million, and in the demo, with 401,000 viewers. The Rachel Maddow Show was third, with 2.6 million total viewers, and had 327,000 viewers in the demo. The first hour of Anderson Cooper 360 at 8:00 p.m. on CNN had the most viewers in the demo Friday, with 405,000, and 1.78 million total viewers.

Fox News won in prime time every night last week, with 2.24 million total viewers on Friday, and 327,000 in the demo. MSNBC was second in total viewers, with 2.06 million in prime time...

MEDIA LOSER:
Andy Scholes

CNN sports anchor Andy Scholes apologized Tuesday after being widely criticism for comments he made in reaction to Tiger Woods’ recent car crash.

Brianna Keilar brought Scholes on her show to talk about Woods, and Scholes began his commentary with the criticism. Asked by Keilar what his immediate thoughts were, Scholes said he was "stunned, I guess? But not entire surprised" that the superstar golfer would end up in an accident.

“Tiger back in 2017 was found by police pulled over the side of the road, asleep in his car," said Scholes, relating the older incident to this accident, which took place in a hilly area that is "known for car crashes" according to the New York Times.

"He said he had taken a lot of painkillers at that time, because we all know Tiger’s undergone a lot of surgeries over the years, and painkillers have become a part of his life," Scholes continued.

The CNN sports anchor's coarse speculation was lambasted online, leading to an apology. Which, we should note, was the right move.

The A-Block

Pervasive Sexual Harassment and Bullying

Democratic politician Lindsey Boylan accused Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) of sexual harassment in alengthy column, writing that he “created a culture within his administration where sexual harassment and bullying is so pervasive that it is not only condoned but expected.”

Boylan — a Cuomo aide who served as chief of staff at the state economic development agency — claimed the governor once remarked that they should play strip poker, and asked colleagues of her whereabouts because he had a “crush” on her.

“It was an uncomfortable but all-too-familiar feeling: the struggle to be taken seriously by a powerful man who tied my worth to my body and my appearance,” she wrote, adding, “His inappropriate behavior toward women was an affirmation that he liked you, that you must be doing something right. He used intimidation to silence his critics. And if you dared to speak up, you would face consequences.”

And there's a lot more in the shocking column.

Another former staffer and one-time spox for both Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio also spoke out on Wednesday, accusing both Democrats of "penis politics" and using "gender domination" to "assert their power over women."

"Andrew, with whom I had a decades-long professional relationship, isn’t the only practitioner of what I call ‘penis politics.’ He just happens to be the master of the art, a subject I am writing a book about," writes Karen Hilton in her likewise explosive column.

Pillow Talk

Former President Donald Trump’s first impeachment lawyer Alan Dershowitz was dismissive of Dominion Voting Systems’ 1.3 billion dollar lawsuit against MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell in a Tuesday night segment for Newsmax.

“That’s a lot of pillows! You have to sell a lot of pillows to make a billion dollars,” he said. But he added "I  don’t think they’re going to get any pillows out of this."

Awkwaarrd

In what can only be called an awkward ending to a joint press avail, an unidentified reporter asked both House Minority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy and House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney the same basic question. And got two very different answers. And then it was super awk.

Limbaugh Flag

Palm Beach County Commissioner Melissa McKinlay announced that she will refuse the order from  Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to lower flags in Rush Limbaugh’s home county, calling the conservative icon "divisive" and saying his passing shouldn't be marked with a "unifying gesture."

Behar Backtrack

Joy Behar had to promptly walk back a comment she made on The View today, when she said that Fox News host Tucker Carlson should be “tied up and put in a corner” for downplaying the storming of the U.S. Capitol. "“I don’t mean to imply that anything harmful should happen," said Behar after hearing herself with her own ears.

Bin Laden, the IRA, and ... Boebert?

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes drew a direct line between the politicized gun imagery being deployed by Rep. Lauren Boebert and a long history of terrorists and revolutionaries similarly centering firearms and weaponry in their symbolism.

"Osama bin Laden, for one, liked to pose in front of a bookshelf with a gun prominently displayed," said Hayes, comparing the terror mastermind to Boebert explicitly.

"Rowdy People Walking Through a Hallway"

Insurrection? What insurrection?!

Conservative commentator Dinesh D’Souza presented a curious take on the deadly and violent clash of Trump supporters on Capitol Hill carried out on Jan. 6 in an attempt to interrupt the congressional certification of the Electoral College vote.

Half a dozen people died as a result of what many have fairly called an armed insurrection, including three Capitol Police officers. But, appearing on The Ingraham Angle, D’Souza had a different take on the historic events of that day. This was a hot topic on Capitol Hill as Tuesday saw a Senate hearing featuring former security officers to unpack what happened on that day.

“In reality, this was a bunch of rowdy people walking through a hallway,” D’Souza told Fox News host Laura Ingraham, suggesting that accounts of that day shared by literally hundreds of elected officials and Capitol security veterans are false and being overplayed to score political points.

Yes, he really did say that.

AOC Tries to Both-Sides Biden Administration on Child Detention, Backpedals Half an Hour Later
OPINION

On Tuesday, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tried to equate President Joe Biden’s reopening of a migrant facility for unaccompanied minors with the Trump administration’s horrific record on child detention — then walked her criticism of Biden back after half an hour of intense reaction.

AOC posted a link to a Washington Post article entitled “First migrant facility for children opens under Biden,” and wrote, “This is not okay, never has been okay, never will be okay – no matter the administration or party.”

The article was the same one cited by Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy when he tried to both-sides the issue at Tuesday’s White House briefing.

But as Jen Psaki told Doocy, and the article explains, this reopening is nothing at all like the Trump administration’s policy of ripping children away from their families and caging them, and is necessitated by the pandemic.

Must See Clip

Hot Mic

On Tuesday, a hot mic picked up Senator Mitt Romney telling Senator Krysten Sinema that she was "breaking the internet" with her message shirt.

Sinema was wearing a pink shirt with the words “DANGEROUS CREATURE” on it while presiding over the Senate. Reporters put the clip and photos on social media and the moment took off.

You KNOW you're big on Twitter when even storied fuddy-duddy Mitt Romney notices.
