Plus: Big Weekend of Books is back
| | When Louisa Lim was growing up in Hong Kong, the King of Kowloon's wonky calligraphy was everywhere. He painted on the lampposts and postboxes, flyovers and electricity boxes — transforming the cityscape and becoming a legendary figure. Lim's quest to find out more about this man and his legacy turned into an eight-year search. "I was on a fool's mission," she says, "a journalistic road to nowhere, but once I started, I couldn't stop." You can hear more in our new series of RN Presents, available now on the ABC listen app. This week, we've been marking NAIDOC Week with a range of stories and interviews celebrating Indigenous Australia. One of my favourites tells the story of The Sunshine Club, a musical that pays tribute to the dance halls of 1950s Brisbane. Read more in this feature article from AWAYE!'s Rudi Bremer. Then, learn all about how First Nations women are fighting for culturally safe birth options in this week's investigation from Background Briefing. And it's time to start getting excited about RN's Big Weekend of Books, which this year is taking place on August 6 and 7. Mark your diaries and share the news — and watch this space to find out more about the program over the coming weeks. Until next time, Rosie Ryan, digital editor Enjoy getting Radio National in your inbox? Forward to a friend so they can too! |
