The Thread's Must-Read
"The Memory Book” by Lara Avery Buy this book I've figured out The Thread writer Tracy Mumford's diabolical plan. While barely concealing an eye roll when I've asserted, repeatedly, that young adult literature has nothing to say to me, she gave me a reading list that's like a Minnesota nice slap in the face. As if to say, "You don't know what you're talking about." I didn't. The first two books on the YA reading list she gave me go right to the heart of something I cherish in fiction: the power of female friendship. Last week, I wrote about how I loved "Exit Pursued By a Bear." Next is "The Memory Book," which won a Minnesota Book Award this year. It's about Sammie McCoy, a high school book-devouring debate champion with a disease that will steal her memory way too young. With the loss of her memories looming, she's impatient to get things done. "Let us pause to soak in how utterly and completely tragic all this is," she tells us. "Okay, neat. What are people who are completely screwed supposed to do?" Sammie starts to put everything into her online journal: her first kiss, her ambitions to be a lawyer, and her navigation of a deep and sometimes fractious friendship with Maddie, her debate partner. Over the course of the book, she discovers that she needs her friend's strong shoulders to help carry her secret. I have a feeling that my summer homework of four YA books are going to be some of the best reading I'm going to do this summer. Tracy, you win! -K.M.
