In an email sent Saturday, University President Mark Schlissel announced that laboratory research will begin to resume with restrictions, citing Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Executive Order which allows research activities to resume.

In the email, Schlissel said all lab work that can be done remotely must continue to be done remotely. As Whitmer detailed in the MI Safe Smart Plan, some economic work can begin in phases. The University plans to follow a similar plan with a gradual return, beginning with some in-person lab work.

Thursday afternoon, Joe Biden, former vice president and 2020 presidential candidate, hosted a virtual town hall with three state governors and over 9,000 viewers to discuss state and national responses to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Biden was joined by Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and Connecticut Gov. Edward Lamont to discuss the response of the Trump administration, the current condition of their respective states and what the future would hold for the nation.

Following last week’s newly released Department of Education Title IX guidelines and regulations, over 300 members of the University community have signed a petition which includes seven demands in regards to University sexual misconduct policy.

The petition was created by LSA senior Morgan McCaul, a sister survivor and sexual violence prevention advocate, alongside student-run non-profit Roe v. Rape, a survivor empowerment organization. They are asking University administration to agree to commit to their demands in a written statement before June 1.

LSA announced in a press release Tuesday morning the Kessler Presidential Scholars Program, a scholarship program that currently supports first-generation students at the University of Michigan and Cornell University, will expand to four additional institutions of higher education including Johns Hopkins University, Queens College, St. Francis College and Syracuse University.

The six universities form the Kessler Scholars Collaborative as part of an initiative to foster a community of first-generation students through research and access to campus resources.
