It was a Friday night at Jen Wilkin’s house and the scene was a familiar one. A spur-of-the-moment dinner had drawn in a large number of neighbors and friends. Glancing between the crowd and the food, Wilkin knew what she had to do. “FHB,” she whispered to her kids. Family hold back. The Wilkins proceeded to slip to the back of the line and ate minimal amounts to ensure their guests would have enough. They didn’t mind—they knew they’d be able to eat once the guests had gone home and they could make a sandwich or order a pizza. “Nobody wants to be at the end of the line,” writes Wilkin in a recent CT article. Given the choice, we want to go first, to get the full portion, to sit in the most comfortable chair. But Christ-followers understand that life is about more than doing what we want. It’s about doing what we wish.” Family hold back was the Wilkin family’s way of saying “do unto others.” As we move through our days, may we, too, consider how to wish for others as we wish for ourselves.
