Dear Reader, Happy New Year and I hope that the holiday has brought you at least a little relief. With the new Covid-19 variant pushing up infections and Boris Johnson exploring how to tighten restrictions, the successful rollout of coronavirus vaccinations grows more critical by the day. There was good news this morning, with the first injection of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, which you can read about here. However, challenges remain. In this excellent piece, Robert Mendick explains in detail exactly what those challenges are and the efforts to overcome them. The New Year is typically a time for economic predictions. As Jeremy Warner writes, Covid-19 made fools of all last year’s attempts, but this year’s forecasts are all the more interesting. Jeremy takes a look at how the pandemic will change our economy, whether optimism is in order and offers a reminder of the one economic factor that can never be predicted and respects neither politics nor borders.
