THE BIG STORY Trump officials are attacking Anthony Fauci. Thousands of doctors are hitting back. It began when a White House official published an op-ed trying to discredit Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top health expert who has helped steer the US through the coronavirus pandemic so far. Peter Navarro, an assistant to the president and a director of the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy, criticized Fauci, saying the health expert has “been wrong on everything” that Navarro has interacted with him on. The response to Navarro has been swift. More than 1,000 health officials came together with a broad defense of Fauci, who has led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984. The tone was direct. The executive director of the American Public Health Association told us, “...the people speaking out against Tony Fauci have absolutely no medical credibility, no public health credibility, and frankly, no policy credibility when it comes to any kind of disaster or situation involving human health.” Kevin Dietsch / Getty Images STAYING ON TOP OF THIS 87 people protesting the death of Breonna Taylor were arrested outside the Kentucky attorney general’s house
In March, Breonna Taylor was killed when Louisville police officers served a search warrant at her home. Taylor and her boyfriend were both asleep in bed when police forced their way in with a no-knock warrant. Taylor, who was unarmed, was shot eight times. Calls for arresting the officers involved in killing Taylor have only grown louder. Yesterday, more than 80 people were arrested outside the home of Kentucky's attorney general after they refused to leave while demanding justice for Taylor. Among those arrested were Houston Texans wide receiver Kenny Stills and Real Housewives of Atlanta star Porsha Williams, who was seen being handcuffed and led away by police. Universal Studios BIG INVESTMENT Google said it would invest $10 billion dollars in India. Nearly half of it is going to the country’s richest man. When Google first unveiled the $10 billion Digitization Fund for India, it said the money would go towards providing Indians with inexpensive internet access, digitizing the country’s small and medium businesses, and using artificial intelligence in areas like healthcare, agriculture, and education. Two days later, a key detail emerged: Nearly half of the money will go to a top telecom operator owned by Asia’s richest man. Google will invest $4.5 billion into Jio Platforms as part of a plan to “increase access for the hundreds of millions in India who don't own a smartphone.” Mukesh Ambani, Jio's owner, has a net worth of more than $70 billion. The context here: More than 500 million Indians are now online, and nearly all of them use inexpensive smartphones that run Google’s Android operating system. Most of that growth has been fueled by Jio, which has more than 388 million subscribers. CAKES ALL THE WAY DOWN This is the woman responsible for those eerily realistic cakes that have been flooding the internet This newsletter might be a cake. There’s no way to tell at this point. I now assume everything is a cake, because that’s an easier way to live. This noted deterioration in my trust in the world happened after a video went viral, in which what appear to be everyday objects — crocs, a roll of toilet paper, a plant — turn out to be cakes. We spoke with Tuba Geçkil, the woman who created those cakes and messed with our sanity. Her bakery, Red Rose Cake & Tuba Geçkil, is based out of Istanbul, Turkey, and she has cake wisdom to impart.
