I've been keenly watching Australian music’s big night for many years and I reckon the 2019 show was a pretty good one. Of course, I do have one lingering issue…
As good as international pop guests Dua Lipa, Halsey and Khalid were, it's staggering that there's still this perceived need for overseas artists to legitimise an event that's supposed to celebrate Australian music.
Taking that ten minutes of broadcast time and dedicating it to showcasing world class Australian acts (here's a good suggestion) could make a world of difference to these artists. More visibility, more streams, more sales, more acknowledgment that Australian music is thriving.
On a night where everyone's talking about celebrating the quality of our artists, the reliance on international entertainers remains embarrassing.
