New Australian music tells the stories of our time | Farewell to some classical music greats | Musicians with disability share their experiences
| | Music matters so much. It can bring us together, remind us of who we are, say that which words can’t. It’s such a privilege for us here at ABC Classic to bring this music to you, every single day, and hear your stories about it. In 2021, new Australian music commissioned by the ABC helped tell the stories that can’t be told by words alone. A standout for me was the Muses Trio’s album Fire Dances, all music written in the aftermath of the 2019-20 bushfires. I can’t think of a better example of music saying something that we still haven’t found the words for. In June, we asked you to vote for the music you can’t live without in the Classic 100. It was a question that still seems so relevant to this point in history – and you responded with an outpouring of personal experiences, showing once again how vital and important music is in life. And just over the last few weeks, you’ve lent your voice to a new piece of Australian music. ‘All is Love’ by Katie Noonan, this year’s Classic Choir anthem, is a piece of music and a powerful thought I’m glad to be taking into the new year. It’s so good to know you’re listening to our programs, reading our website and sharing your thoughts and knowledge on our social media and the text line. You being there helps us move forwards into 2022. Thank you for being there for us, Russell Torrance Presenter, Classic Breakfast |
