Early in the pandemic, colleges closed physical offices en masse. But policies splintered in the months that followed. Some university staff hasn’t gone back to the workweek campus since March 2020, while others returned in rotations, splitting the workweek between home and office or working nontraditional hours as they helped their own children through virtual instruction. In The New Academic Workplace, Chronicle reporters interviewed employees about productivity and work/life satisfaction while working remotely.
