Plus: Remembering Owen Harries, one of Australia’s most significant foreign policy thinkers
| This week, Speaking Out celebrated its 30th anniversary | In the past three decades, it’s covered every major turning point in Indigenous affairs: from the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody in the early 90s, to the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020. And right from the start, it’s been produced and presented by Indigenous broadcasters. Its current presenter, Larissa Behrendt, says a theme of the program is celebrating the resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. “We take particular care to bring on people that the broader ABC audience might not know,” she says. “Giving space to those stories and perspectives has been a part of the role I love.” Read more reflections from Larissa and past presenters of the program, including Wayne Coolwell, Rhianna Patrick and Karen Dorante, in this story from Speaking Out producer Jai McAllister. This weekend, Sporty is firing the starting gun on their 60-day fitness challenge. The idea is to set yourself an achievable personal goal that increases your physical activity. It could be bike riding, samba dancing, or turning your gardening into a workout – and there’s a prize for the most compelling and funny accounts. Until next time, Rosie Ryan, digital editor Enjoy getting Radio National in your inbox? Forward to a friend so they can too! | |
