| ‘Don’t be vanilla, be vibrant’: The 3 Vs of loyalty The best loyalty programmes create an “emotional connection” and are about more than “getting the customer to the next transaction”, says former Holland & Barrett CRM chief Jonathan Haywood. |
What we've been reading this Friday Meta AI – You can’t turn it off (even if the bot thinks differently): From the middle of April, Meta AI has been rolling out to more countries across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger (though not yet in the UK); in your feed, your chats and the search bar (see Meta’s newsroom), letting users do things such as look for flight information whilst planning a trip with friends. For those on the lookout for hallucinations, Artie Beaty writes for ZDNET, “There's no way to disable Meta AI from either Facebook or Instagram,” but when he asked the chatbot, it responded by directing him to toggle off AI search in settings (yep, there’s no such toggle). When we covered AI 2024 trends decks at the start of the year, we included Benedict Evans’ quote, “Every text box on the internet will get an LLM”. Now that lots of Meta’s boxes can fire up Meta AI, it’s going to be fascinating to learn what users do with it. Designing a design system (with 12 themes) You might not be in a design or UX role, but you’ll no doubt interact with people who are, even if through a PM. As such, this article on the work of ‘designing a design system’ by Adobe’s lead designer Lynn Hao, operations manager Angelie Herreria-Tagle, and lead content strategist Jess Sattell is worth a read. It details a collaboration framework and some neat themes to organise around (from brand, colour and motion, to ‘surprise and delight’). We saw this article via LinkedIn and Will Grant, one of the authors of our User Experience and Interaction Design guide. The guide is two years old now but as relevant and useful as ever. Revenge of the homepage As social platforms have moved away from news distribution and users have found it harder to find the signal in the noise, it’s not just email newsletters that have seen a renaissance. The New Yorker has a great piece on the value of the homepage in a post-social world, including how The Verge has seen traffic grow over 2023. |
