Leaders can do better with tough decisions by clearly defining the problem and its urgency, whether the decision is a team or solo responsibility, then asking stakeholders for feedback and holding meetings to finalize the decision, says YSC Consulting CEO Eric Pliner. "Avoid ambiguity or soft-balling the message because you're afraid that stakeholders won't like how you want the decision to be made," says Pliner.

A Salary.com survey found 73% of US employers aim to increase payroll budgets by at least 4% this year, while 50.7% are adjusting specific job salaries in response to the labor market. Inflation was a near-universal concern for the compensation decision-makers polled by Salary.com.

Only 15% of marketers polled by SmartBrief are operating without event budgets this year compared to 23% in 2021, while the roughly 40% who had reduced budgets and shifted toward virtual interactions has remained about the same. Only 25% of marketers say virtual event sponsorships were successful and 73% are planning on investing in other tactics such as digital marketing, even though mask mandates are being lifted across the US and in-person events are picking up.

Initial jobless claims fell to 166,000 last week, the lowest level in more than 53 years, beating expectations by Dow Jones economists of 200,000. Meanwhile, continuing claims increased to 1.52 million.
