Tips for NTI/Homeschool Success
I’m Bridget from Rainbow Home School, and I have 4 young kiddos (they’re 5, 4, 3, and 10 months). We started homeschooling our oldest this year (plus preschool for the next two). We finished out the last school year doing NTI, but we decided to make the switch to full-time homeschooling in May. We’re new to homeschooling, and our kids are young, but I hope I can give a few tips to make your NTI experience more successful!
• First, do your schooling in short bursts. Research has shown that young kids can only focus well for 15-20 minutes at a time. Build in breaks like dance parties, physical activity, jumping on the trampoline, etc., so when they switch subjects their brains are ready to learn. Try Cosmic Kids Yoga on YouTube - it’s free and super fun!

• Try to incorporate some fun into your school day if you have the time and energy. There are lots of ways to do this - it can be as simple as doing school outside on a nice day, or doing writing work on black paper with neon gel pens. You can find tons of easy science experiments and sensory experiences to try, using things you probably already have around your house! We like to make non-Newtonian fluids like ooblek out of cornstarch and water, freeze small toys in ice and let the kids “rescue” them, and do basically anything with baking soda and vinegar because kids love the way it bubbles and fizzes! (Check out our Do Science at Home videos for some fun experiments!)

• Especially if you’re just doing NTI and plan to return to traditional school when it reopens, it’s important not to get caught up trying to be like the homeschooling families with the beautiful home classrooms you see on Instagram. Sure, they’re amazing to look at and you can get lots of good tips and advice from the accounts, but you really don’t need all that extra stuff to teach your kid at home. Anyone with a notebook and a library card can give their child a full education! There are lots of extras that might be nice to have, or make things easier, but you don’t have to break the bank building a homeschool room in your house. If you do want to buy things, check Dollar Tree and the Target dollar spot - they have some great teaching and learning tools!

• Finally, and I think most importantly, remember to give yourself (and your kids) grace. This is an unprecedented time we’re in, and most people doing NTI or homeschooling were thrown into it. They likely never even planned to educate their kids at home. For most people, homeschooling is a choice made after lots of thought and research. This kind of change can be hard on anyone, including children. It’s a stressful time and lots of kids are dealing with anxiety and fear. I know a lot of people are worried about doing enough hours of school, teaching well enough, etc. Remember, when things get back to normal and everyone gets back to school, everyone will be behind. Teachers will have plans to get everyone back up to where they need to be. Just do your best, and that’s enough!
