One person dies in Fort Stockton house fire One person was killed in a house fire Monday night in Fort Stockton, according to the Fort Stockton Pioneer. The victim has been identified as 78-year-old Pascuala Nunez. Firefighters were called out to a home in the 1600 block of North Nelson just after 7 p.m. on Monday. The firefighters were able to get the fire under control by 9 a.m., but Nunez died in the fire. The Fort Stockton Pioneer reports that another resident of the home was able to make it out. The resident and two firefighters were taken to the hospital for their injuries. Authorities have declared the house a total loss. KOSA-TV CBS 7 ODESSA Austin Fire Department mourns the loss of veteran firefighter The Austin Fire Department has lost one of its long-time firefighters, the department announced Tuesday. In a Facebook post, AFD says firefighter Justin "Corbin" Hunt, who served on Rescue 31/B Shift, died Tuesday at his home. Hunt served at AFD for 19 years. In the post, AFD bids their fallen crew member a final goodbye, saying: "Rest in peace, Corbin; we'll see you on the top floor." KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN 'They deserve a break': Houston firefighters fly out to California to help exhausted crews battle deadly wildfires More than 40 firefighters from the Houston area boarded planes Tuesday morning at Hobby Airport, joining thousands of emergency responders headed to northern California to fight the deadly wildfires. Southwest has agreed to waive fares for the 170 firefighters from Texas who are going to California today in support. That includes firefighters from Conroe, Montgomery and Humble and other local departments. Right now, there are close to 30 fires burning across the state that firefighters have been battling for weeks. Flames have already burned through thousands of homes, prompted mass community evacuations and millions of lives are still in danger. The crews were up bright and early for their flight and ready to help out. They will also be relieving the more than a hundred Houston-area firefighters already in California. KENS CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Related: The hidden cost that Texas firefighters heading to California must pay Around 50 firefighters from the Austin and San Antonio areas took the sky Tuesday morning as part of the latest Lone Star State contingent deployed to help battle wildfires in California. "There's two planes. One is running north from Dallas to Amarillo, (and) there's one running from Houston to San Antonio," Randy Denzer said. Denzer is a battalion chief at the Austin Fire Department. He said the call for duty is a part of the Gov. Greg Abbott's Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System (TIFMAS). Announced on Sept. 11, the effort provides much-needed manpower to help fight back against uncontained wildfires in California. "We're going to help our brothers out in California. They need it," Denzer said. "They need to go home and see their family. They've been out there for a while. Boerne is sending firefighters Chad Leeper and Will Stripling. KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI Downtown San Antonio buildings will light up in red this weekend Landmarks and skyscrapers in downtown San Antonio will showcase hues of red this weekend to honor fallen firefighters across the country. Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters will take place in the Alamo City on Saturday evening, when Frost Tower, the Henry B. González Convention Center and the Tower of the Americas will light up in red. The Alamodome will have a marquee dedicated to firefighter Greg Garza, who died in a tragic accident while at a scene on Oct. 15. Garza, a 17-year veteran, was among a group of firefighters who responded to a call for an electrical problem at a hotel when he stumbled while exiting a fire apparatus and was hit by a van. Businesses across the city are encouraged to light up in red if possible. Businesses that choose to participate can use the hashtag #nffflightthenight2020 on social media, SAFD said. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Program allows Waco firefighters to scan lost pets for microchips The Waco Fire Department is now able to scan the microchip of any lost pet in partnership with the Humane Society of Central Texas (HSCTX). The program, Fire House to Your House, begins this week to help lost animals reunite with their families. Stray animals are typically brought to the local shelter, but this program will provide citizens a way to get lost animals in their neighborhood home a lot quicker. Local firefighters are equipped to scan microchips at their stations and have a protocol in place to handle animals that do not have a microchip. Studies show that most lost animals are found within only 1,000 feet of their homes. "So many lost animals enter the shelter every day. If we can offer another option for those good Samaritans who are taking the time to try to find the owners of lost pets, we can reunite animals and their families faster without a trip to the shelter," said Paula Rivadeneira, executive director of the Humane Society of Central Texas. Firefighters contain fire at New Mexico recycling yard VIDEO: The Bernalillo County Fire Department and Albuquerque Fire Rescue have contained a large fire at a recycling yard in the area of Edith and Montano on Tuesday. "The smoke was very black, I don't know if that means it's hot or what; you could see the flames, they were probably higher than our building. It was just really scary," said Amanda Philip, who works nearby. AFR reports there are 20 units at the scene of the outside fire in addition to Kirtland Air Force Base Crash & Foam trucks. Fire officials say the fire did not cause any damage to the building. All occupants at the facility were also evacuated along with nearby homes. No injuries were been reported. Crews say they were able to respond within five minutes of getting the call, getting a good and early handle on the fire. "Most of the damage, most of the flames are outside, exterior to a holding area. Nothing interior at all at this time," said Captain Martin Salazar with AFR. KRQE-TV CBS/FOX 13 ALBUQUERQUE Tattoos a unique form of therapy for Las Vegas shooting survivors The terrifying moment a gunman opened fire on a crowd of Las Vegas concertgoers is painfully etched into survivor Dean McAuley's memory. Now he and others who escaped the Oct. 1, 2017, mass shooting on the Strip are having healing images etched on their skin, something McAuley calls a "reminder of survival" and a "badge of honor." On Wednesday, 21 shooting survivors and first responders will receive free tattoos as a form of therapy at the Seven Tattoo Studio on Polaris Avenue. The event, Healing Ink, is being organized by Artists 4 Israel, a nonprofit group that has provided "therapy tattoos" for survivors of terrorist attacks and mass shootings. "Artists 4 Israel perfected this unique trauma therapy. They can incorporate existing scars into works of art or create meaningful images that draw the eye away from wounds. This allows victims to reclaim their bodies and the stories they tell," the organization said in a statement. LAS VEGAS SUN A timeline of the insidious path the coronavirus took around the world to kill more than 1 million It started as a seemingly perplexing case of pneumonia. From a wet market in Wuhan, China, COVID-19 has spread to nearly every country on the globe in just under nine months. It's overturned daily lives, shuttered businesses and schools, and disrupted the world economy. It's infected more than 33 million people worldwide and has killed at least 1 million people — a toll that's likely to be far more than the official tallies show, global health officials say. The coronavirus has laid bare public health shortcomings in even the most advanced countries on the planet that, up until 2020, hadn't witnessed a pandemic for more than 100 years. In the U.S., COVID-19 has tested hospital systems and their capacity to treat severely ill patients and has pushed drug companies to try to develop vaccines and therapeutics in record time. CNBC Old fire station in California converted into mental health facility to prevent suicide among firefighters Modern day firefighters benefit from high tech equipment and regular training but those measures do little to shield them from their number one killer: suicide. "Our firefighters experience terrible things. Terrible things that they can't share with their families because it is just going to depress their families, quite honestly," said Los Angeles City Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas. The department's labor union, the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City, on Monday took a major step towards suicide prevention for 3,500 members and their families. They converted an old fire station in Arleta to become the United Firefighters of Los Angeles Center for Health and Wellness, which will provide space for counseling and classroom training. Its staff will include mental health specialists who will be available around the clock, plus an additional 100 peer counselors in the field. KABC-TV ABC 7 LOS ANGELES Public invited to America's Tribute to Fallen Firefighters The foundation invites residents to watch the 45 minute special on the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation website and through the foundation's social media platforms at 10 a.m. Sunday, as well as take a moment to read the 2020 Roll of Honor; a collection of stories about fire heroes submitted by their families, friends and fellow firefighters. Normally events of the National Memorial take place in Emmitsburg, Maryland, at the location of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial, but the foundation had postponed the annual memorial in June due to the challenges of planning a large, in-person event amid uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic. "We could not risk the health and safety of Fire Hero Families, our staff volunteers and attendees by having our traditional Memorial weekend," National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Executive Director Chief Ronald Siarnicki said. "We encourage all of our Fire Hero Families, members of the fire service and general public to join us Sunday." THE ROLLA DAILY NEWS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
