The driver of a tractor-trailer was killed in Allen Tuesday when the rig they were driving collided with another vehicle before flying off an overpass and crashing into the roadway below. Video shared with NBC 5 showed the truck burst into flames as it twisted upside down before hitting the ground. While the investigation into the crash continues, Allen police said it appears the tractor-trailer was northbound on Central Expressway when it collided with another vehicle. The tractor-trailer then drove over the right side of the overpass and caught fire as hit the ground. The driver of the truck, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, was killed in the crash. Police said the driver's identity will be released after the family has been notified.  

The City of Copperas Cove has named its interim fire chief. This comes following the recent resignation of Fire Chief Michael Neujahr, effective September 23. Copperas Cove City Manager Ryan Haverlah announced Tuesday that he has appointed Deputy Fire Chief & Emergency Management Coordinator Gary Young to serve as the Interim Fire Chief. The City says that Haverlah's appointment stated in part that this decision was made "in order to maintain continuity of operations and to continue to provide excellence in public safety services." Young started working with the City of Copperas Cove on September 23, 1989, where he has served for the past 33 years. He can be found at the Central Fire Station located at 415 S. Main Street.  

A vacant Dallas Hotel on Mockingbird Lane Near I-35E Stemmons Freeway was the scene of two fires late Monday and early Tuesday. Dallas firefighters had been there several times before. Unpaid guests seeking shelter in the old building are blamed for the problems. The City of Dallas has efforts underway to address issues with homeless people and the decline in the neighborhood. In the most recent fires, Dallas Fire Rescue responded to what used to be called the Love Field Hotel and Suites at 1241 West Mockingbird Lane before 10 p.m. Monday and around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. A fire spokesman said no one was injured but several homeless people were escorted from the building. Dallas Resident Tellie Daniels said she and her husband saw the fire.  

Smith County Fire Marshal and Emergency Management Coordinator Jay Brooks has resigned from his position. During Smith County Commissioners Court on Tuesday, Pct. 1 Commissioner Neal Franklin said that Brooks had given his letter of resignation, which will be effective Oct. 1. Brooks said he is taking job as a software developer in the private sector. The commissioners accepted the resignation and Franklin said an appointment would not be made yet. The position will be posted for county officials to take applications. Brooks has served Smith County since 1998 when he became a volunteer recovery diver and firefighter/EMT-B. He became a peace officer and he joined the Smith County Fire Marshal's Office in 2008 as a volunteer deputy.  

The Golden Crescent Regional Planning Commission donated over $5,000 worth of fire prevention learning material to the Victoria Fire Department. The materials include crayons, Dial 9-1-1 fire safety kits, pop-up fire trucks and Junior Firefighter stickers. The department will distribute these items at community engagement events and school visits during Fire Prevention Month in October. The Golden Crescent Regional Planning Commission is a voluntary association of local governments and special districts within the seven-county Golden Crescent region. It encompasses Calhoun, DeWitt, Goliad, Gonzales, Jackson, Lavaca and Victoria counties.  

The "555 Foundation" was recognized by the Lubbock City Council for its work to protect the city's first responders in a special session today. Mark Hill, the father of the late firefighter Eric Hill, accepted the honor. Lieutenant Eric Hill died in January 2020 while responding to a car crash on north I-27. Hill was struck by a vehicle driving southbound that failed to drive in a single lane, veering to the left onto the median and northbound lanes striking Hill, fellow firefighter Matthew Dawson, and LPD officer Nicholas Reyna. The truck flipped onto its roof and came to a rest in a field east of the northbound access road. Reyna was pronounced dead at the scene while Hill and Dawson were taken to the hospital where Hill died a short time later. Since then, his mother and father have focused on first responder safety and driver education to prevent similar incidents.  

An old, abandoned warehouse building goes up in flames Tuesday evening in downtown Jackson. The facility, which used to be an old recycling building, is located at the intersection of Monument and Palmyra Streets. Crews with the Jackson Fire Department spent hours putting out the blaze. Chief Willie Owens says the fire broke out around 4 p.m. Chief Owens says no one was inside the building when the fire broke out. Firefighters tell us tires and plastic car parts were inside the abandoned building. Although the fire department was able to get the blaze contained, the chief said there were a few issues and challenges trying to dose the fire. "The challenge is trying to get close enough to the fire. As you can see, the powerlines up here, if we could've got a truck on this side, like a ladder truck, and if we could've got under those wires, we could've been much more effective," said Chief Owens.  

You expect to find firefighters at a fire department. But what you may not expect to find is a firefighting robot like the one on display at the Greenwood Fire Department in Moosic. It's called the Super Vac TAF 35 Mobile Firefighting Robot. It's remote-controlled and can pour 1,200 gallons of water a minute on a fire. "The video surveillance that it has on it also has thermal imaging, so it could help for looking for occupants in the building or looking for hotspots of the fire. right here in Moosic, we are looking at starting just over a million square foot warehouse, so that's a lot of ground to cover," said Buddy Miller, Greenwood Fire Department. "Sending an unmanned unit in, in the event of a potential collapse hazard, it allows you to get into the deep seed of a fire without endangering some of your firefighter lives," said Dana Shaffer, SuperVac Manufacturing.

Still, the vast communications system has, through time and familiarity, become almost invisible — hidden in plain sight. Even in a world filled with cell phones, the old system still has its place. There's no language barrier, no location confusion and no delay. Pull the hook and help can be there within four minutes. Boston's system, consisting of about 1,200 fire alarm boxes, is the oldest fire alarm system in the country. In fact, the technology, if you could call it that, is the same as when these boxes first went up in 1852. It is essentially a telegraph using morse code.  

Following concerns about the rise of e-bike and e-scooter fires in the US, firefighters hosted a national event to raise awareness about the potential risks posed by lithium-ion batteries. Hosted by the Fire Department of New York in mid-September, the symposium was attended by 300 people from across North America, including the National Bicycle Dealers Association president Heather Mason. According to the NBDA, e-mobility products are the third biggest cause of fires in New York. Earlier this year the NBDA and consultancy Human Powered Solutions (HPS) launched a campaign to educate retailers and the industry at large about the growing safety problem that has been created by the surge in consumer purchases of electric bicycles and scooters that utilise lithium-ion batteries.  

September 24 marks a dark day for Sacramento. It was 50 years ago that 22 people died — 12 of them children — when a jet taking off from Sacramento Executive Airport overran the runway and slammed into Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour. Witness accounts indicate about 100 people were inside the popular eatery when the inexperienced pilot who had participated in the Golden West Sport Aviation Show changed their lives forever. Twenty-five people were injured, many with serious burns. Margie Smith, who lived nearby with her husband and three young children remembers that Sunday like it was yesterday. "Our neighbor's daughter told us about the crash. But that's all we knew," she recalled. "It wasn't until the next morning that we learned how close to home it hit."
