Keith Hopkins named new Mesquite fire chief The city of Mesquite has named Keith Hopkins the new fire chief, effective Oct. 7, 2024. According to a news release from the city, Hopkins will oversee 244 firefighters across seven stations in the Mesquite Fire Department, which has responded to almost 16,000 calls this year. Hopkins has been with the department since 1999 and has served in numerous positions including as a firefighter, driver/engineer, captain over Station No. 5 and battalion chief over inspection, investigation and public education. "I am proud to have spent the last 25 years with the Mesquite Fire Department," Hopkins said in the news release. "It is a tremendous honor to have the opportunity to serve as Chief. Our department has a long-standing tradition of excellence, and I look forward to leading this dedicated team of professionals as we continue to ensure the safety and well-being of our citizens." WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS San Antonio firefighters secure 20% pay raise in new collective bargaining deal VIDEO: After months of negotiations, the City of San Antonio and the San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association (SAPFA) have struck a deal on a new collective bargaining contract. The new contract will give firefighters and EMS a 20% raise over the next three years. It's the first legitimate pay increase that they've received in the last decade, and it's the first time they've been able to vote for their contract in over 15 years," SAPFA president Joe Jones said. Jones added that the tentative three-year agreement between the city and the firefighters is a major step in the right direction, which is evidenced by the fact that 97% of members voted in favor of the deal. "It's really hard to overstate the importance to our firefighters and paramedics to get this done and get it across the finish," he said. WOAI-TV NBC/CW 4 SAN ANTONIO Update: Pipeline fire in Deer Park dies down but continues to burn; some evacuation orders remain VIDEO: A pipeline fire that erupted in a suburban Houston neighborhood burned for a second day Tuesday with still no definitive word on when the blaze would finally go out, when nearby residents may be able to return home or why a car drove through a fence and hit a valve before the destructive explosion. Although the fire was getting smaller, the disruptions caused by the Monday morning explosion in a grassy corridor between a Walmart and a residential neighborhood left some locals increasingly weary. On Tuesday, people could be seen returning to their homes to get clothes and other items before quickly leaving again. "We literally walked out with the clothes on our backs, the pets, and just left the neighborhood with no idea where we were going," Kristina Reff said. "That was frustrating." KTVT-TV CBS 11 FORT WORTH Fort Worth firefighters welcome Yellowstone actor during surprise visit to Station 17 PHOTO: The Fort Worth Fire Department extended a warm welcome to actor Cole Hauser, known for his role as Rip Wheeler on Yellowstone, during his visit to Station 17. The department expressed gratitude to Hauser for taking time out of his busy schedule to spend the morning with firefighters and civilian staff, sharing stories, laughs, and coffee. "Next time you find yourself off the Dutton Ranch and in Fort Worth, come on by again! You've got a friend in the FWFD and we'll keep a spot open at the kitchen table for you," stated the department. WOAI-TV NBC/CW 4 SAN ANTONIO Missouri fire department faces 119th line-of-duty death since 1887 The Kansas City, Missouri, Fire Department has had its 119th firefighter die in the line of duty since 1887. A firefighter-paramedic with the department died during a training exercise on Tuesday. KSHB 41's Isabella Ledonne learned the majority of firefighter deaths are from medical emergencies, including the most recent death from KCFD's very own. Data from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) shows 40% of all firefighters who were killed in the line of duty in 2023 died from sudden cardiac arrest. Thirty-five percent are from trauma and/or crushing while on fire grounds. The number of firefighter fatal medical emergencies has gone down since 1980, as sudden cardiac deaths accounted for 40 to 45 percent of total fatalities from 1980 to 2019. KSHB-TV NBC 41 KANSAS CITY State of emergency declared at North Carolina coast after ‘firehose' storm hits; 50+ roads still closed VIDEO/PHOTOS: North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper Tuesday declared a state of emergency in southeastern counties as more than 50 roads along with many schools and businesses were still closed after a no-name storm hit the coast, spawning a tornado and dumping nearly 21 inches of rain near Wilmington Monday. North Carolina braced for a storm that forecasters warned could bring heavy rain — as much as 6 to 8 inches in some spots. But one narrow band got a "firehose" that dumped historic rain amounts in a so-called 1,000-year flood, triggering flash floods that damaged many homes, businesses and roads. As of Tuesday, 52 roads in 12 counties were closed including seven key routes and a main coastal highway with the majority in Brunswick County, which has closed schools this entire week.
