Flour Bluff firefighters face funding dillema due to election ballot error Finding a new source of funding is the challenge the Nueces County Fire Department in Flour Bluff is facing after a clerical error forced the fire station to cancel their tax increase request on the Nov. 5 election ballot. Nueces County ESD #2 was planning to use the extra revenue for some much needed protective gear -- live-saving gear firefighters put on every time they rush out to a burning home. The gear is meant to protect them against fire and dangerous fumes that can cause cancer. It only last 10 years before needing to replace, and costs roughly $3,500-4,000 for each set. Nueces County ESD #2 needs to replace half of their gear -- that's 10 sets out of 20. Now that the election item to raise the tax money to pay for that gear is no longer on the ballot, Flour Bluff Fire Chief Dale Scott is left looking for other options. KIII-TV3 SOUTH TEXAS City of Palmview shuts down fire department building amid concerns about mold; Remains uninhabitable Problems with mold forced the Palmview Fire Department to shut down Fire Station #1 in April. Six months later, the station — which is adjacent to City Hall — remains uninhabitable. When the city will either decontaminate or demolish the station remains unclear. "The City of Palmview takes matters such as these very seriously as the health and safety of City Personnel is our number one priority," according to a statement released by City Attorney Eric Flores. "The City will continue to take any and all necessary steps to ensure our firefighters are safe so that we may continue to serve our residents with the utmost care. Additionally, the City of Palmview will continue their diligent efforts to secure additional funds to build a fire station our hardworking firefighters deserve." Fire Chief Jerry Alaniz had concerns about Fire Station #1 as far back as June 2014, according to documents released under the Texas Public Information Act. PROGRESS-TIMES Follow Up: Federal report finds Deer Park ITC didn't have important alert system in place The US Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board has released a report into the ITC Fire and has identified issues that show the company did not have a critical safety alert system in place. The board's "Factual Update" into the Deer Park fire, which started on March 17, found the following: ITC did not equip the Tank 80-8 piping manifold with emergency or remotely operated isolation valves. These valves could have stopped an uncontrolled release, if for example, the pump or piping manifold were damaged. The tank farm was not equipped with a fixed gas detection system, so no alarms were activated to warn ITC personnel of a release. The reduction in tank level and volume that occurred as naphtha product released from Tank 80-8 did not trigger any alarms in the ITC control room. As a result, ITC personnel were unaware of the naphtha product release before the fire erupted. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON Williamson County commissioners appoint Hank Jones county fire marshal Williamson County commissioners appointed Hank Jones as Williamson County fire marshal Oct. 29. Jones was named the successor of the county's first marshal, Marty Herrin, whose retirement was accepted by the court Oct. 29. The position is a two-year term. Jones began his fire service career in 1991 and has been with the city of Georgetown since 1998, said Chris Connealy, the senior director of emergency services for the county. Jones has worked as a paramedic, a firefighter and an arson inspector, among other fire-related positions, Connealy said. "[Jones] has a number of credentials in his career that puts him in a great position to not only be fire marshal but special operations," Connealy said. The court created the Fire Marshal Special Operations Group in February 2018 and began operations April 1, 2018. COMMUNITY IMPACT - AUSTIN Lightning strike zaps 15-foot hole in Fort Worth parking lot A cold front sweeping through Texas brought storms and rain early Wednesday. One storm delivered a lightning strike in Fort Worth that struck a gas station parking lot. The Fort Worth Fire Department tweeted the situation was "stabilized." No injuries were reported. "15x15 hole in parking lot cause by lightning strike this morning. Crews have stabilized the incident. No injuries. #FWFDLightningStrike - Boat Club and Shadydelll." What responders found was quite shocking-- a hole in the parking lot that looked like a construction crew with a jackhammer had been at it all night. Almost the entire section of the parking lot was blocked off Wednesday due to the large spread of chunks of concrete or asphalt that the strike had sent flying. Authorities in Arizona searching for missing Pine-Strawberry Fire Chief Gary Morris Authorities are searching for the Pine-Strawberry Fire Chief who has been reported missing after setting out to hike an Arizona trail last week. Sheriff's officials say 73-year-old Chief Gary Morris was reported missing around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. Deputies say Chief Morris, an avid hiker, was scheduled to do 51 miles over four days of the Arizona Trail with the ending point being in the Doll Baby area, southwest of Payson. Authorities say Chief Morris told friends and family he would call when he made it to the end of the trail, but never did. An Arizona Department of Public Safety Ranger helicopter was called to assist with the search, along with Tonto Rim Search and Rescue Team. Officials say the area is very remote. Overnight temperatures Tuesday dipped into the 20s. ABC 15 NEWS ARIZONA Kincade Fire: Harrowing dashcam video shows San Francisco firefighters driving into flames, embers hitting windshield VIDEO: Harrowing video of San Francisco firefighters sent into the Kincade Fire drives home the reality that our first-responders are risking their lives when they step in to battle raging wildfires. Firefighters from San Francisco Fire Department were deployed to help fight the Kincade Fire, which has now burned 74,000 acres in Sonoma County. Video taken through the windshield was recorded at 3 am Monday, as the crew headed straight into the fire. As they drive down a dark, narrow road against a burning hillside, embers and smoke bombard their windshield. In the middle of the night, they twist and turn down the curvy, two-lane road, inches away from spreading flames. KGO-TV 7 NEWS Plane crashes into New Jersey home killing pilot, igniting fire: 'Everything was just a massive blaze' A Cessna 414 plane crashed into a suburban New Jersey home Tuesday morning, igniting a massive fire and completely destroying the house, local fire officials said. The crash was in Colonia, about 22 miles outside of New York City. Video from the scene shows massive flames and plumes of smoke rising into the air. The pilot, the sole person on board, was killed, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. No one was inside the house, but the blast caused heat and fire damages to both homes next door, according to Woodbridge police. A woman was in one of those adjacent homes; she escaped uninjured after hearing the explosion, said police. ABC NEWS Several shots fired into West Virginia volunteer fire department; trucks damaged At least 13 shots were fired into the Ona Volunteer Fire Department building, damaging three trucks, Cabell County Sheriff Chuck Zerkle said Tuesday. The sheriff said someone shot through the station's garage doors, hitting three truck's radiators and transmission lines. As a result, two of the trucks will be out of service. Fluids were seen leaking from the garage. The incident happened sometime Monday night. There are no suspects at this time. Investigators are looking at surveillance cameras to determine more information. No one was hurt in the incident. WSAZ-TV NBC 3 Call for full-time paid chief, two more firefighters in Maine town The town's full-time firefighters say the current paid firefighting service is too thin for a town of York's size, and they are seeking residents' support to add two more people to their ranks. But as much as they seek relief from their 56-hour work week, it is just as important to them that the town hire a full-time paid fire chief. And if they have to wait a year or two for all of that to happen, they're willing to do so – on the proviso that the town step up to the plate now and listen to their concerns. Town Manager Steve Burns said he hears them, and even though it is unlikely two more firefighters will be hired next summer, he does want to take a comprehensive look at the town's fire service and plans to seek funding for a professional facilitator to run a series of high-level stakeholder meetings.
