| Firefighters evacuate Montgomery County home just before 5-ton AC unit crashes through ceiling VIDEO: A huge home caught fire and burned for nearly two hours in Montgomery County overnight. This happened in 18000 block of Lilac in the Tanglewood Manor subdivision just off FM 1485 in New Caney. Firefighters say at one point they were forced to evacuate the home because there was an AC unit on the roof of the home, and the foundation of the home was crumbling. Shortly after those firefighters got out that AC unit fell through the second floor. The homeowner told firefighters he was outside with his family doing target practice when he noticed lights flickering on the second floor, then smelled smoke. He looked up and saw a fire in the master bedroom. The family called the fire department. Firefighters say they faced a number of obstacles putting this fire out. The first was that there are no hydrants in this area, so fire engines were having to go back and forth to bring water in. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Tomball Fire Department installing commemorative statue The Tomball Fire Department will be erecting a statue of a firefighter outside of their main station in the coming months to commemorate the firefighters who have served their community. Tomball City Council members voted unanimously to approve installing the statue, and to accept the $35,000 which was raised to build the statue. The road to raising this money began almost five years ago, Tomball Fire Chief Randy Parr said. "We felt that it would be appropriate for us to find donations and erect a statue in front of Fire Station 1 to honor our firefighters that have been before us, that are there now and the ones after us," Parr said. Parr said it was important to honor those firefighters of the past as they were the ones who started the department. "They're the ones that have protected the community, sacrificed their time, their energy," Parr said. "In one case, one of them sacrificed their life." HOUSTON CHRONICLE - METERED SITE Mechanic escapes injury after ambulance catches fire in Bryan A mechanic doing a test drive on an ambulance having maintenance issues caught fire Monday night near SH 21 and Highway 6 in Bryan. Witnesses said the worker was quickly trying to remove medical equipment from the back of the Allegiance Ambulance after the engine caught fire. He was the only person on the ambulance at the time of the fire. The Bryan Fire Department was able to stop the fire from spreading from the front of the unit to the back end. No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported. KBTX-TV CHANNEL 3 BRYAN Lawsuit settlement states terms of ambulance service in Smith County Two Tyler-based ambulance providers have settled a lawsuit that involved claims of unfair practices in Smith County. Under terms announced Tuesday, UT Health East Texas EMS will continue to provide ambulance service in a contract with the city and the county; Christus EMS will be allowed to transport patients between its hospitals. In court papers, representatives of UT Health had claimed that having Christus sometimes transport patients was a violation of its contract. Christus claimed that the contract had created an unfair monopoly. Leaders of both hospital systems said in a news release they were pleased with the outcome. "This settlement is in the best interest of the citizens of Tyler and Smith County as it alleviates the confusion the dual ambulance operations were causing and allows UT Health East Texas EMS to remain the exclusive provider of ambulance and emergency transportation services in the city of Tyler and Smith County," Moody Chisholm, CEO of UT Health East Texas, said. TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH Keller Firefighters Rescue Worker From Home Depot Roof A contractor working on the roof of the Home Depot store on Highway 377 in Keller this morning suffered an electric shock. The Keller Fire Department's technical rescue team was able to rescue the man from the roof. He was taken by CareFlite helicopter to the burn unit at Parkland Hospital in Dallas for treatment. The Keller Fire Department is part of a regional team of 14 departments that share the costs for specialized teams dealing with technical rescues, hazardous materials, explosives and swift-water rescues. | Efforts underway in New York to build firefighter cancer registry amid observed link No one knows how many firefighters have been diagnosed with cancer in the country, let alone the state or Dutchess County. In the past five years, officials from the state to firemen associations, have recognized the prevalence of the cancer risk that career and volunteer firefighters face. And different organizations are taking steps to quantify the problem. On Oct. 17, 2018, the state Volunteer Firefighter Enhanced Cancer Disability Benefits Program, regulations proposed by the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, went into effect. It allows volunteer firefighters to file a claim that they had been diagnosed with cancer relating to their fire service. The Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Office of Fire Prevention and Control will be able to see how many claims were filed at the end of the year. But the rig cost the city nearly $1 million dollars and there are people who want to know how this truck is better than the old one, which lasted the city 22 years. Lt. Rick Emmons is more than happy to help with that. The new truck is going to help firefighters work faster and more efficiently, he says, and in a vast variety of ways. It starts with the heavy-duty aerial ladder, 107 feet long compared to the old truck's 75-foot ladder. "It's much bigger than the old truck's," Emmons says. "It's not always the height that we need. Oftentimes it's the horizontal reach. We're often the second or third to the fire and we have to park back a bit. We need that extra length to get to the buildings." That massive reach has already been put to good use, as it happens. SUN JOURNAL New protocol allowing firefighters to leave scene to be tested in North Carolina All members of the Medical Control Board voted to start testing a pilot program that would allow Charlotte firefighters to leave the scene of a call if the patient is OK and MEDIC is already on its way. "You call 911 and you're going to get a red truck coming pretty fast in a short time frame," said CFD Chief Reginald Johnson. "But there are non-emergency calls -- foot injuries, back injuries where the person is in a stable place at home but still wants to be transported to the emergency room. That could be one of those type of calls." Johnson said the new protocol would free up his firefighters, so they can respond to more serious, life-threatening calls, like cardiac arrests, car wrecks and seizures. Charlotte resident Shay Morgan suffered a seizure and said it required a response from first responders. "They actually took me to the emergency room and I actually had to stay in the hospital a couple of days," said Morgan. WSOC-TV New Jersey firefighters battle four-alarm blaze live on A&E's "Live Rescue" No one was injured Monday night as Paterson firefighters battled a structure fire on Rosa Parks Boulevard that spread to an adjacent building. The fire was broadcast live on national television as part of a three-hour version of A&E's "Live Rescue." Paterson Fire Chief Brian McDermott told TV viewers, "We had a pretty advanced fire on arrival. ... We had a collapse of the main fire building." Ten to 15 people from four families were displaced by the fire, according to Red Cross New Jersey and the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office. Just before "Live Rescue" wrapped up its coverage at midnight, Capt.
