Driver pinned inside car during crash with ambulance, San Antonio police say Emergency crews had to help remove a man who became pinned inside his vehicle during a crash with an ambulance on the city's Northwest Side early Wednesday morning, San Antonio police said. The crash occurred around 1:15 a.m. on Babcock Road near Wurzbach Road. According to police, an ambulance was transporting a woman in her 70s and was stopped at a red light when a man inside a gray sedan crashed into the back of the vehicle. Police said the male driver of the sedan was stuck inside his car and had to be rescued by firefighters. The vehicle also had to be cut away from the ambulance, police said. Investigators say they believe the driver was speeding when he crashed into the ambulance. The ambulance driver, the woman, and the driver of the sedan all were taken to University Hospital with various injuries. The San Antonio Police Department, the San Antonio Fire Department, and EMS all answered the call. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Travis County ESD #2 says it will cease EMS if no vote on new district Travis County Emergency Services District No. 2 advised that it may have to cease ambulance service and advanced life support if funding sources are not available. More than 4,700 signatures were gathered on a petition to start up the election process for creating a new ESD. Officials say the "overlay" district could provide the financial resources to maintain the current level of support and services throughout the area. The Pflugerville City Council can allow voters the chance to vote on the new district, but if the Council opts out of the election, then there will be no tax revenues to support the services. "As such, the question to the City is simple, will you consent to allowing your constituents the option to create a new district that would provide for the continuation of advanced life support and ambulance transport servicesat the current levels?" the ESD 2 letter stated. KEYE CBS 42 AUSTIN Belton Fire Department to alter firefighter schedules The past couple of years for the Belton Fire Department have been tumultuous. The department lost 17 employees over the course of more than a year starting in 2018. That eventually led to the city to transition its emergency medical services to private provider American Medical Response. All of that is in the rearview mirror as the fire department now begins to hone in on its recruitment and retention efforts. At the top of that list is shifting firefighters' schedules from working one day and off for two days to working two days and off for four days. The fire department is expected to switch to the new schedule in mid-January. "This type of schedule has been around since the early ‘90s," Fire Chief Jon Fontenot said. "A lot of departments have moved to this schedule. I worked for six years under this schedule (in Tomball) and it's really a great schedule for a department like Belton." The current schedule, Fontenot, creates unneeded stress on firefighters. KILLEEN DAILY HERALD - METERED SITE San Angelo City Council approves a reading in favor of private ambulances On Tuesday morning, the San Angelo city council voted unanimously to approve the first reading of an ordinance that would allow private ambulance services in the city, which hasve been prohibited for decades. San Angelo Fire Chief Brian Dunn presented a case to the council, saying the recent merger between Shannon Medical Center and Community Medical Center, in addition to the COVID-19 pandemic, has greatly increased the need for non-emergency transfers. Dunn said he worries the fire department will not be able to perform emergency transports in a timely manner if too many ambulances are busy with non-emergency transfers. "What we're asking is, you allow us to have some private companies come in to do these transports, and take this burden off of us. We can only do so many non-emergency transports at a time because we have to have things remaining in service for emergency transports. Yesterday I think I had four ambulances go out for emergencies in a six-minute period. I mean, it is just crazy," he said. KXVA/KIDY-TV FOX ABILENE/SAN ANGELO Lewisville Fire Gets Help From ATF-K9 ‘Molly' To Break Serial Arson Case Dating Back To 2019 Officials with the Lewisville Fire Department say they have found and arrested the person responsible for a string of car arsons… but they couldn't have done it without a 4-legged officer. Investigators say an ATF-K9 named Molly, from the Grand Prairie Fire Department, helped make the case. A task force led by the LFD arrested Zainul Bandeali in connection with the arsons at the Windsor Court Apartments and other locations, dating back to July 2019. Over the span of months there had been 10 vehicle arsons at the complex, damaging some 20 vehicles. Investigators say Bandeali lived at the complex, but they're still working to find out why he allegedly set the fires. Molly, a 6-year-old yellow Labrador retriever trained to sniff out accelerants, helped lead investigators to the 63-year-old. KTXA-TV CBS 11 FORT WORTH Annual Santa ride atop fire engine set for December In the face of all the disappointments that we've endured during 2020, there is one cherished tradition that will not be affected - Santa Claus' ride throughout the City atop a Murphy Fire Engine. "We want to make sure all the boys and girls on Santa's list are visited, so we're happy to take him around town," says Fire Chief Del Albright. "As in previous years, we'll take Santa all around Murphy, making sure that he is familiar with all of our streets." Starting on Monday, Dec. 7 and continuing for about 15 days, Santa will ride atop a Murphy fire engine with lights ablaze, and the bell ringing. An occasional blast from the siren will be sounded to announce the arrival. The rides will cover every street in Murphy except short cul-de-sacs. Departure from the Fire Station will occur promptly at 6:30 p.m. each evening, continuing until 8:30 p.m. CITY OF MURPHY PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

New Jersey firefighter, 80, honored on 'Rachael Ray' show for service to community VIDEO: On the surface, Bob Halberstadt's roles as a volunteer EMT and firefighter in his native Blairstown are not all that unusual. But considering he is old enough to be the father or even the grandfather of his fellow first responders, the 80-year-old stands out for his service and his sense of duty to keep his community safe. Halberstadt's unique situation and generous spirit caught the eye of celebrity chef Rachael Ray, who honored him on her namesake television show last week as part of her "Thanks for Giving" series leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday. "What I love most about him is that he's living all of his life," Ray said of Halberstadt, whose segment on the show aired Thursday. "Not only is he living all of his life, he sacrifices his life for others. I have tremendous respect for that on so many levels." NEW JERSEY HERALD - METERED SITE Congressmen introduce bill to make National First Responders Day a federal holiday A South Carolina lawmaker has partnered with a fellow congressman from Illinois to introduce a bill to designate October 28 as "National First Responders Day". Republican Congressman Ralph Norman who serves South Carolina's 5th District partnered with Democratic Congressman Bobby Rush of Illinois to introduce the bill. If passed, the bill would add it to the current list of ten "legal public holidays" under current law. Right now, New Year's Day, Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day are all recognized. Both congressmen say they believe the selflessness and heroism of first responders should be honored and celebrated with a legal public holiday. WHNS-TV FOX 21 GREENVILLE NYPD Investigating After Man Seen Shooting Flamethrower Into the Air on Roof of MTA Bus VIDEO: The NYPD is investigating after a video on social media surfaced showing a man shooting a flamethrower into the air as he was on top of an MTA bus with people inside — but it may have all been a part of an unsanctioned stunt. The incident took place Nov. 8 along the B-26 bus route near Franklin Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Flames come shooting out from the weapon and high into the air, and later onto the ground, as the man jumps around on top of the bus. There were about two dozen people inside the bus at the time, the MTA said, who were later evacuated. "We don't even need to say how absurd, dangerous and just plain stupid this was. The reckless individual who torched over the top of an occupied city bus put New Yorkers, including the bus operator, in life-threatening peril," said MTA Communications Director Tim Minton.
