3 killed in explosion, fire at Bowie County barn Police are investigating an explosion and fire at a Bowie County barn that killed three people Tuesday evening. It happened around 7:20 p.m. on County Road 4242, according to the Bowie County Sheriff's Office. Deputies, along with Simms, DeKalb, Maud, and New Boston Volunteer Fire Departments were called to the scene and arrived to find a shop building on fire. The sheriff's office says there were "structural indications that an explosion had ignited it." Firefighters found the three victims while they were putting out the flame. The sheriff's office has identified the three victims as the owners of the property, 60-year-old Steven Granbery, 55-year-old Cynthia Granbery, and 65-year-old William Barnes, all of Simms, Texas. Bowie County Fire Investigator Scottie Taylor along with Bowie County Sheriff's Office Investigators Michelle Carrier and Captain David Biggar responded to investigate. KLBK-TV CBS 13 LUBBOCK Port Neches, Groves firefighters to get collective bargaining Preliminary voting totals show strong support for collective bargaining for two local Professional Firefighters Associations. The election still has to be certified, but the landslide of votes in favor likely mean the outcome won't change. Voters' approval means Port Neches Local No. 3713 and Groves Local No. 1905 - the last two unions in the region that did not previously have a collective bargaining agreement - can establish their very first contract between the firefighters and the city. Provisions up for negotiation could include wages, hours, fringe benefits, discipline, health and safety and other working conditions. In Groves, preliminary voting totals on Tuesday night showed 84.05 % for and 15.95% against proposition A for collective bargaining out of a total of 1,091 votes. BEAUMONT ENTERPRISE Hidalgo County house fire kills elderly woman, wounds daughter-in-law "It was like hell," Jose Ibarra said Tuesday evening, standing with his family on Concepcion Avenue a few miles south of Moore Field Road in rural Hidalgo County. He was standing several yards away from what, until a few hours before, had been the home of his mother and grandmother. The scene Ibarra painted did sound awfully hellish. A fire that afternoon claimed the life of Ibarra's grandmother and sent his mother to San Antonio with severe injuries, Alton Fire Chief John Salinas Tuesday evening. Tired-looking firefighters covered in sweat and soot toted axes and pry bars that afternoon from what was left of the home where 89-year-old Gregoria Lara lived with Consuela Azua, Ibarra's mother. The fire gutted the mobile home and its add ons. Emergency crews hacked away at most of the rest, Ibarra said, struggling for the better part of an hour to extinguish it. MY RGV NEWS Pflugerville voters deny tax increase for Emergency Services District No. 17 ambulance services Pflugerville voters said no to four propositions to become part of Emergency Services District No. 17, which would provide ambulances for Pflugerville and its extraterritorial jurisdiction. The election item comes after Travis County ESD No. 2, the Pflugerville Fire Department, said it needs more money to serve residents. ESD No. 2 has said it will stop services at the end of the year due to the lack of funding. Proposition A would have added Pflugerville to ESD No. 17, but it failed 61.5%-38.5%. Proposition B failed 64%-36% within the Pflugerville city limits. Propositions A and B for the extraterritorial jurisdiction both failed as well. The proposition would have included a tax increase for voters. The State of Texas caps at $.10 per $100 in valuation for ESD services. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Blaze at Amarillo apartments leaves one injured PHOTOS: Amarillo Firefighters fought a two-alarm blaze at the Enclave Apartments early Wednesday morning that left one person in the hospital. According to Amarillo Fire Department officials, at 1:55 a.m., crews were called to a structure fire at the Enclave Apartments at 6209 I-40 West. The first units on the scene found residents trying to evacuate while the fire was showing from the complex roof and breezeways. Firefighters immediately began assisting with rescuing residents on the higher floors while firefighting operations continued. One person was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. Searches were made to ensure all residents escaped. Red Cross and the apartment's management are providing housing for the displaced residents. The fire has been contained to the building already involved. KVII-TV ABC/CW+ 7 AMARILLO House fire leaves some neighborhood residents without power in southeast Houston VIDEO: People in one southeast neighborhood woke up without power after a house fire spread to nearby buildings Tuesday morning. This started just after midnight near the Gulf Freeway and Wayside. Houston firefighters were called at that time to a home in the 1900 block of Dismuke. When HFD arrived at the scene, firefighters found flames shooting from the home. Crews first worked on evacuating anyone who may have been in harms way. Fire officials said the fire spread to a home next door and also into the second-story apartment behind it. Fire officials said the entire apartment building will be without power until CenterPoint can get it reconnected. "So for convenience they'll probably all be, all stay somewhere else," Jeff Cook with HFD said. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Firefighters battle mixed-use building fire in Massachusetts VIDEOS: Firefighters battled a fire in Everett on Wednesday morning. Heavy smoke could be seen filling the air as crews worked to put out the flames coming from a three-story, mixed-use building on Broadway. The Everett deputy fire chief says everyone inside the building was able to make it out and there are no reported injuries. The owner of the building, Wilgon Rangel, says this blaze will impact the people who work in his restaurant located on the first floor. "That's my money. I eat on the building, on the restaurant," he said. "I got a whole bunch of employees. I've got about 40 employees, you know, everybody is going to be out of a job." Police have closed portions of Broadway and Ferry Street. WHDH-TV ABC 7 BOSTON Los Angeles Firefighters Commuting From Alaska, Florida, North Carolina Could Be Forced to Relocate Los Angeles City Fire Department firefighters who commute thousands of miles to work each month could be forced to relocate to Southern California if a residency requirement is imposed in order to keep emergency personnel closer to the city in the event of a major disaster. A report prepared for the Board of Fire Commissioners showed 115 firefighters currently live out of state, including 36 about 1200 miles away in Idaho, 10 about 2000 miles away in Tennessee, 11 about 1300 miles away in Texas, and 15 more than 600 miles away in Utah. One firefighter commutes from Alaska ZIP code 99603, 3,617 miles away, or an estimated four-day drive in the event of a major emergency. Another lives in Florida ZIP code 33914, or 2,645 miles away. Only 499, or about 15-percent of the workforce, lives within city limits, according to the analysis. KNBC-TV NBC 4 LOS ANGELES Wisconsin technical college adds virtual reality to firefighting training VIDEO: The Chippewa Valley Technical College is getting a new training experience in virtual reality for its firefighting program "The FLAIM system is a virtual reality or immersive learning system," Mark Schwartz, CVTC Fire, and EMS continuing education coordinator said. Schwartz says CVTC is the first technical college in Wisconsin to have a VR firefighter simulator. "It allows us to put not only students but current firefighters in virtual live fire situations," Schwartz said. It lets students get a different type of hands-on experience. They will be able to see how it feels to hold a water hose and practice using the nozzle. A vest attachment allows you to feel the heat from the fire the closer you get to it in the simulation. "They actually do what firefighters are supposed to do and 360 of whatever situation you're in just to get an idea of what's going on and then make your plan of attack," Schwartz said. WEAU-TV NBC 13 EAU CLAIRE ‘Sierra Calls' in North Carolina create headaches for short-staffed first responders during non-emergency medical calls Charlotte Firefighters are waving a red flag about a new change to city policy in how first-responders are dispatched to medical calls. The change was announced last week. It creates a type of response being referred to as a "Sierra Call." WBTV Investigative Reporter David Hodges says the change comes as MEDIC struggles with staffing issues and to keep up with call volume. When you dial 911 for an ambulance, many people are often surprised to see fire trucks respond to the scene first. "Why is a fire department here? Well, because we can respond quicker," said Timothy Bell, from the Charlotte Firefighter Association 6660. Bell, secretary of the local firefighter union, says the recent change in their response procedures is already creating headaches and potentially dangerous situations. WBTV CBS 3 CHARLOTTE Bill to stiffen penalties for firefighter killers clears Senate committee A Senate committee passed a bill Tuesday that would stiffen criminal penalties against those who murder an on-duty firefighter. Under the proposal (SB 370), the convicted murderer of a firefighter would face the same consequences as a person who killed a police or correctional officer — life in prison without the possibility of parole. Republican Sen. Ed Hooper — a former firefighter himself — is the bill sponsor. "Those that serve and protect us need to have the same protection when they are attacked and killed," Hooper said. The Senate Criminal Justice Committee voted unanimously in favor of the bill. Lawmakers heard testimony from Randy Wise, a representative of the Florida Professional Firefighters association. Wise shared the story of two Jacksonville firefighters who were stabbed in 2020 by a patient while riding in the back of an ambulance. It was that incident, Wise said, that exposed the need for enhanced firefighter protections. FLORIDA POLITICS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
