New fire chief named for city of Belton The city of Belton named a new fire chief after a six month search Wednesday morning. The Belton city council is expected to ratify the appointment of Jonathan Fontenot at its next Meeting on May 26, according to City Manager Sam Listi. "I am convinced that our interviews of 10 people has resulted in the best candidate to serve the Belton community," Listi said. "We look forward to Chief Fontenot beginning his service here." Fontenot has been the Assistant Fire Chief of Operations and Training in Tomball, TX for 10 years. He previously served as an Instructor in the fire program at Austin Community College, and as the Emergency Management Coordinator and Interim Chief in Taylor. Fontenot, a U.S. Army veteran, also served as Chief of Training for a fire and emergency service contractor in Iraq. KCEN-TV NBC 6 CENTRALTEXASNOW.COM Explosion rocks Pelican Island tank farm, two injured Two people were injured in an explosion and fire Tuesday at a crude-oil tank farm on Pelican Island. The fire was at the Pelican Island Storage Terminal, a tank farm near Texas Clipper Road, east of the Texas A&M University at Galveston campus, city spokeswoman Marissa Barnett said. Firefighters from several agencies contained the blaze. Tanks at the business are used to store a form of crude oil, Barnett said. The two injured people were transported to the University of Texas Medical Branch for treatment, Barnett said. Their medical condition could not be determined Tuesday evening. Pelican Island is on the north side of the Galveston ship channel. It is the location of the Texas A&M University at Galveston campus and multiple industrial businesses. Texas A&M University at Galveston issued a shelter-in-place order as a precaution because of the fire, school spokeswoman Rebecca Watts said. GALVESTON COUNTY DAILY NEWS Amarillo, Canyon fire departments experience difficulties bringing on new firefighters amid pandemic One significant impact resulting from the pandemic is the way local fire departments train and bring on new staff. Amarillo's Fire Department is currently experiencing a hiring freeze which won't allow them to hire new staff until the City of Amarillo sees a turn around economically. "They have to find out when the economy starts turning around, them opening everything back up, numbers should start looking better as far as revenue coming into the city," said Cody Snyder, PIO captain for Amarillo Fire Department. "Fiscal year starts October 1st, which will be a new budget year. We're hoping, by then, we will start being able to hire some new guys." Synder says not being able to hire anyone right now is hurting them, because they are building a new fire station. The AFD was looking to bring on 10 new firefighters to help man that station and its new fire truck. KFDA-TV CBS 10 AMARILLO Houston Fire Department stops issuing reopening violations to local businesses The Houston Fire Department is no longer writing violations or tickets to businesses that don't comply with coronavirus health and occupancy rules, KHOU 11 Investigates has learned. With the state's reopening in full swing, complaints of non-compliance continue to pour in. Since phase one of reopening May 1, HFD has investigated 1,526 complaints submitted to the city's 311 help line. That is 34% of the 4,460 complaints filed since March 18, when bars and dine-in restaurant business was shut down. But recently, the department's occupancy task force shifted its enforcement approach. "As of May 9, we have not been issuing any citations and we haven't been issuing any notices of violation," said Houston Fire Chief Samuel Pena. The department had written a total of 10 citations and a 150 "notices of violation," which are essentially warnings. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON COVID-19 hits Williamson County EMS as demand for tests increases Drive-up COVID-19 testing started May 1 at Family Emergency Room clinics in Cedar Park and in Round Rock. Since then about 600 tests have been done. The staff is now averaging 72 a day now that anyone can schedule an appointment for a free test, whether they have symptoms or not. The clinic's medical director, Dr. Nathaniel Greenwood said both clinics are booked into next week with about a thousand people on a waiting list. "We definitely expected an increase in response but definitely it has exceeded what we planned on," said Dr. Greenwood. Dr. Greenwood believes the decision to drop the requirement of having symptoms of COVID-19 to get into the two sites came after an outbreak at two nursing homes. KTBC-TV FOX 7 AUSTIN San Angelo Fire Department moving fast to replace aging ladder truck The city is moving fast to replace an aging and faltering San Angelo Fire Department ladder truck. The 1995 fire engine failed third-party testing Feb. 26 and was found to have deficiencies that would cost at least $78,000 to repair. Main issues include the transmission not shifting into reverse, hydraulic system failure, water flow concerns and excessive engine wear, according to assistant fire chief Patrick Brody. The engine was scheduled for replacement by the department in October, but Brody asked to fast-track the purchase after he found a demo model that meets the city's needs at a steep discount through Siddons Martin Emergency Group. The 2019 model under consideration has roughly 3,000 miles from it being driven around the country to showcase to potential buyers and boasts a price tag of $697,195. When Brody priced a similar model brand new, the cost was more than $898,300. GO SAN ANGELO/SAN ANGELO STANDARD TIMES PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Tracking The Pandemic: How Quickly Is The Coronavirus Spreading State By State? Since the first coronavirus case was confirmed in the United States on Jan. 21, over one million people in the U.S. have confirmed cases of COVID-19. On April 12, the U.S. became the nation with the most deaths globally, but there are early signs that the U.S. case and death counts may be leveling off, as the growth of new cases and deaths plateaus. The pattern isn't consistent across the country, as new hot spots emerge and others subside. In response to mounting cases, state and federal authorities have emphasized a social distancing strategy, widely seen as the best available means to slow the spread of the virus. Most states have put in place measures such as closing schools and nonessential businesses and ordering citizens to stay home as much as possible. NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO Memphis Fire Dept. spent more than $2 million to protect first responders during the pandemic, records show The Memphis Fire Department spent more than $2 million on items related to COVID-19 during a two-month period to protect first responders during the pandemic. FOX13 investigated to find out how it is possible to spend that much tax money in such a short time. In just one week, Memphis Fire spent more than $240,000 on its coronavirus response. It was during that week, Memphis and Shelby County had every reason to believe a surge in COVID-19 cases was on the horizon and first responders would be at risk. The department began buying items to protect its workers and the public. The cost to battle a pandemic is not cheap, and time matters. During the third week of March, as the City of Memphis was poised to declare a State of Emergency on March 19, its fire department began stockpiling items to respond to COVID-19. WHBQ-TV FOX 13 MEMPHIS Despite high volume community COVID-19 cases, Colorado first responders have kept themselves uncommonly healthy Greeley's unfortunate status as the center of one of the state's larger COVID-19 outbreaks has led to a high volume of pandemic-related work for the city's first responders. However, in spite of the potential for exposure, Greeley Fire Department, Police Department and Emergency Medical Services personnel have managed to largely avoid significant spread of the virus within their ranks. That's very likely because of aggressive, intentional policy on the part of the first responders themselves, as well as their partners at dispatch, the Weld County Regional Communications Center. "It seems obvious maybe in some regard, but many may not be aware," division chief over operations for the Greeley Fire Department Brian Kuznik said. GREELEY TRIBUNE To Stem COVID, This Small Indiana City Decided To Test All Public-Facing Employees Behind a nondescript strip mall in Carmel, Indiana, a short line of cars gathers mid-afternoon next to a large tent. Medical professionals stand out front, dressed head to toe in blue medical coveralls. People in the cars — many of them first responders — drive up to be tested for COVID-19. The test involves a really long swab placed deep into the nose, toward the back of the throat. "No, it's not fun, but it's quick. I would say painless, but it is a little painful," Carmel firefighter Tim Griffin said. "It's 5-10 seconds and then it's all done and the burning goes away and you move on." While there were shortages of COVID-19 tests across the country in March and April, this affluent Indianapolis suburb took an unusual step to keep residents safe. All city employees who deal directly with the public — such as police officers and emergency medical services personnel and sanitation workers — were tested weekly even if they showed no symptoms. Their families could also be tested. KAISER HEALTH NEWS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
