AFD crews worked the scene of a fire involving multiple semi-trucks at a travel center off Interstate 40 this morning. The fire began about 4:03 a.m. at the Hana Travel Plaza on Interstate 40 just east of Amarillo. After investigating at the scene, the Amarillo Fire Marshal's Office determined the cause of the fire was an equipment malfunction. "We do have five trucks that are pretty much a total loss," said Cody Snyder, public information officer for AFD. Officials said one of the semi-trucks contained pool cleaner, an oxidizing agent, which caused it to create oxygen as it burned and "enhance the fire." Another truck was filled with recycled plastic, which Snyder said presents a challenge when extinguishing a fire. One truck driver has been released from the hospital after being treated for minor burns. KFDA-TV CBS 10 AMARILLO VIDEO: A fire broke out about 4:45 a.m. Tuesday at the Knights Inn Motel, located in the 3600 block of Timon Boulevard. The fire began in room 301 and spread to other floors at the facility, also damaging the upper floor at the roof. Fire officials said one occupant was transported to the hospital, but they don't know his condition. There were a lot of flames and it broke through a common attic at the motel. Winds caused the fire to spread. The fire department utilized a water hose and defensive tactics to keep the fire from spreading. One motel occupant said he was rousted from his sleep in the middle of the night by firemen to bring him to safety. "The police officer was there," hotel guest Lenson McCarthy said. "He asked me if I was the only person in the room. I said what's going on and said my girlfriend was in the room with me. He asked me if anybody was in the room next to me and I said not to my knowledge. KRIS-TV NBC 6 CORPUS CHRISTI PHOTOS/VIDEO: The Howard County Volunteer Fire Department battled a grass fire Monday evening at FM 176 at Buzzard Creek. Around 8:30 p.m. volunteer firefighters responded to the fire according to a Facebook post. Around 2 a.m. Tuesday morning, crews were heading home according to their Facebook page. No injuries were reported. KMID-TV ABC 2 MIDLAND VIDEO: The massive fire that destroyed 11 condominiums in Nassau Bay started from the balcony of a top floor unit, fire officials said Tuesday. The fire, which also caused one building of the Bayfront Towers condo complex to collapse Monday afternoon, is being ruled accidental, according to Tony Russo, the fire marshal for the city of 4,000 people that sits along Clear Lake. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. Meanwhile, firefighters were back at the condo complex on Lakeside Lane on Tuesday morning to finish general cleanup and to turn over the scene to the complex's management. While it's not immediately known how many residents were impacted by the fire, up to 16 units were heavily damaged, including those considered destroyed. Still, the fire came as a shock to people living at the 75-unit complex. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON San Angelo Fire Department purchases 13 new cardiac monitors that give high-quality care before even arriving at the hospital. Zoll's new x-series advanced is a multifaceted monitor that measures the amount of air being delivered to the patient, helps deliver artificial breaths at the correct rate with the proper amount of air going through, has the ability to deliver electricity to the heart in case of cardiac arrest, amongst many other functions. Firefighter and paramedic, Mason Matthews, says this improves not only patient's treatment en route to the emergency room but also improves the level of care medics are able to deliver. An important detail in these purchases is that there was no cost to taxpayers. The machine was fully funded by the C.A.R.E.S grant. KLST-TV CBS 8 SAN ANGELO Harlingen kicked off their new Homebound Vaccination Program and vaccinated 11 residents with the COVID-19 vaccine on Monday, with more scheduled this week. The program consists of 15 firefighters with the city's fire department administering the vaccine to homebound residents as emergency medical technicians monitor the inoculation for any type of reaction, according to a news release from the city. The vaccines were provided by Cameron County, the news release stated. Harlingen's Health Director Josh Ramirez said the city is working with the National Guard to provide Johnson & Johnson vaccines for the program. "We have a list of all the people who have called us for homebound [COVID-19] testing so we're using the same list that we have already to see who wants to get [the vaccine] along with their providers," Ramirez said. VIDEO: About 150 firefighters worked feverishly to put out a massive fire at a waste management facility in the Brighton Park neighborhood Tuesday. The wind-blown fire started around 4 p.m. in a prairie near the railway about a block away from Waste Management of Illinois, Inc.'s recycling facility near 48th Place and Christiana Avenue, according to a statement from the company. Embers were blown into the plant's yard, resulting in the recyclable materials catching fire. In a matter of minutes, it ignited the Southwest Side recycling plant and quickly erupted into a full-blown inferno. "One side was fire and the other side was like, catching on fire, like smoking," witness Ferdinand Miranda said. As fire trucks raced to the burning Brighton Park plant, employees scrambled out just ahead of the flames. "I heard one guy ask if anyone was still in there," Miranda said. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO VIDEO: An Oklahoma City firefighter who lost a fellow firefighter to lung cancer will participate in the American Lung Association's outdoor Fight For Air Climb in Oklahoma to raise money for research. Cpl. Zach Rowell has witnessed both triumph and tragedy in the battle against lung cancer. He lost a colleague to the disease, but his father survived it. Rowell is taking on the Fight for Air Climb in memory of his friend and in honor of his father, according to an American Lung Association news release. "Looking at the stats of cancer and lung disease, firefighters are at a very high risk and are susceptible to it," he said. "We know it's an issue and a risk, so, we're going to fight for progress." Rowell will be one of 20-25 firefighters on the Oklahoma City-Fire Rescue team of climbers, who have raised over $2,400 for the Lung Association. "The Lung Association is the industry leader in research," Rowell said. KFOR-TV NBC 4 OKLAHOMA VIDEO: Buffalo Firefighters struck three alarms for additional personnel and equipment to handle a fire that broke out Tuesday morning on Bailey Avenue near Clinton Street. Firefighters were called to the scene just after 10:50 a.m. Photos from the scene showed heavy smoke coming from a bowling alley/restaurant known as the Bowl Inn Pizza and Lanes in the 700 block of Bailey Avenue. The smoke billowed high into the sky and could be seen on the skyline from Orchard Park and along Route 190. Buffalo Fire officials say the fire started in the back of the structure, and caused the roof of the building to partially collapse. They say there were several 50 gallon propane tanks on the roof at the time it collapsed. Firefighters had been inside the structure trying to battle the flames, but fortunately they were all pulled out by orders of a chief on scene before the roof gave way. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries. WGRZ-TV NBC 2 BUFFALO VIDEO: After months of waiting and anticipating the reveal of the new Hattiesburg fire engine, the day finally came Tuesday. The truck is not your average fire truck. The Southern Miss-themed engine is painted black and gold with the USM Golden Eagle logo on its side. The colors were chosen to signify the great relationship between the university and the city of Hattiesburg. "When it was coming time to update our fleet, especially as we prepare for Station 9, we thought that we would brand this one in honor of the university that has done so much for our community," said Mayor Toby Barker. The mayor and Hattiesburg Fire Chief Sherrocko Stewart came up with the idea. There is also a Golden Eagle painted on the doors to represent how much pride the city takes in the athletics department at the university. The truck will be stationed at Fire Station 6, which is near USM's campus. WDAM-TV NBC/ABC 7 HATTIESBURG VIDEO: A family was reunited with special belongings left behind after a fire caused them to leave their house more than a decade ago. This wouldn't have been possible, however, without the eagerness of a Savannah firefighter who made it her mission to put the treasures back into the right hands. The house that once stood there was being used by the Savannah Fire Department for training exercises. Unbeknownst to them they would find long-lost family treasures that were stuffed in the attic, leading Captain Chela Gutierrez on a hunt to find the family they belong to. "There's wool in here," said Captain Gutierrez. This quilt is one of about 15 others left behind after part of a family's home caught on fire. "I saw a trash bag full of like brightly-colored fabric and I said, ‘that looks like quilts.'" Captain Chela Gutierrez with Savannah Fire says they were using the blighted home on Cumming Street for training before it was torn down. It had been abandoned for decades. WTOC-TV CBS 11 SAVANNAH |
