Houston firefighters concerned as protective gear runs low, coronavirus testing hard to get With a bottle of hand sanitizer in his pocket, and ever present COVID-19 concerns on his mind, the president of the Houston Firefighters Union told 13 Investigates his members are worried. "We don't have enough resources, as it stands today, to last through this pandemic as it changes." Marty Lancton explained Tuesday, pointing to a shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for firefighters and paramedics. Regardless of their COVID-19 status, patients with flu-like symptoms require first responders to wear gloves, a mask, eye protection and a full gown. There is a nationwide shortage for some of it. On Tuesday, the Houston Fire Department had 500 gowns. About 50 are used on an average day, according to the department. Houston Fire Chief Sam Pena said many more are on order and expected to arrive well before the existing supply runs out. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON San Antonio Storage Unit Catches Fire— and It's Not the First Time Emergency crews were called to a Chacho's restaurant Sunday night after its nearby storage unit caught fire. According to multiple reports, the Leon Valley Fire Department responded to a call at the Chacho's on Poss Road around 10 p.m. Smoke was seen coming from the roof of a small building behind the eatery, one used as a storage unit. No injuries were reported. Authorities said the fire, which only took 10 minutes to put out, could have been caused by faulty wiring or a tossed cigarette. According to KENS 5, the same building ignited just a few months ago. Cigarettes were to blame that time. SAN ANTONIO CURRENT Austin police, fire announce changes to protect from coronavirus spread Emergency responders in Austin have announced changes to their operations to protect themselves and those they serve from spreading the coronavirus. As KXAN reported earlier this week, any person being monitored for symptoms and under a health authority order must give their address, which is passed along to first responders so they can prepare if they are called to respond. But now, both departments are making changes to their daily systems as the disease continues to spread. When Austin firefighters respond to medical calls, they will be wearing more protective equipment. Normally, they wear eye protection and gloves and carry both an Automatic External Defibrillator and a medical bag. Now they are also adding a mask, gown or Tyveks suit and full goggles. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Heavy Rain Causes Street Flooding, High Water Rescues Across North Texas Heavy downpours overnight and during the early morning hours Wednesday left some North Texas streets flooded and drivers stranded. At least 4 cars were stuck in high water — nearly covering the tires completely — along Interstate-35E in Dallas, near Manana Drive. A CBS 11 News photographer at the scene said a wave, caused by a big rig driving nearby, hit one of the cars and moved it several feet. Members of Dallas Fire Rescue were out before sunrise helping drivers caught in the high water. One man was stranded in a low lying area under LBJ Freeway at Park Central. Firefighters had to wade into waist deep water to rescue him from the top of his vehicle. First-responders are again reminding drivers to avoid high water and ‘turn around, don't drown'. KTXA-TV CBS 21 FORTH WORTH Waxahachie Fire Fighter Association helps school district in time of need After the announcement of school closures in the Waxahachie Independent School District, the Waxahachie Firefighters Association stepped up and gathered meal donations to give to children, on March 16. Recently, many schools have extended their scheduled spring breaks due to the outbreak of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus, or COVID-19. They are taking precautions by deep cleaning schools, preventing any germs from passing. However, by closing schools, many students will not be receiving breakfast or lunch meals they usually receive at school. Battalion Chief John Rodgers, helped organize the drive-through, along with the rest of the Firefighters Association. "The school district had a need to bridge a gap for Monday and until they could put a system in place for a longer term child nutrition plan. We decided as an association to help bridge that gap on Monday, so they could formulate a plan..for Tuesday on," Rodgers said. WAXAHACHIE DAILY LIGHT Dinnertime disaster shut down by fire sprinklers in McKinney The McKinney Fire Department responded to a fire alarm Monday at Greenhaven Apartments at 8690 Virginia Parkway where units determined that the fire was extinguished by one sprinkler head. The resident told firefighters she had left food on the stove and it caught fire. Everyone was able to get out safely. Smoke and water damage was contained to one apartment unit. The action of this one sprinkler head saved lives and an extensive financial loss of property. According to the NFPA, there are hundreds of fires reported every day in the U.S., but cooking fires are by far the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries. "With the COVID-19 concerns people are staying home and cooking more," MFP spokesperson Merit Ossian said. MCKINNEY COURIER-GAZETTE PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

‘Shelter in Place' order could hit New York City: Here's what it means New York City could soon be placed under a "shelter-in-place" order to contain the coronavirus — here's what it would mean for the Big Apple's 8.6 million residents. Under the strict public health measure, all non-essential businesses would be shut down. That means only police and fire departments, hospitals, grocery stores, pharmacies and perhaps gas stations, banks and laundromats would remain open. The move would ramp up the lockdown that's already been enacted in the city, where theaters, gyms, libraries and museums have closed and bars and restaurants are only doing takeout and delivery. "It's taking some of the rules we're encouraging people to follow now making them tighter and reducing the workforce greatly and reducing travel greatly," Mayor Bill de Blasio said, warning that food service and retail could be shut down. NEW YORK POST Coronavirus In Pittsburgh: Firefighters Say Not Enough Is Being Done To Protect Them And Public During Outbreak The head of a local union is concerned that not enough is being done to protect firefighters and the public during the coronavirus outbreak. Ralph Sicuro, president of the International Association of Firefighters Pittsburgh Local 1, says they are already seeing how fast the virus can spread. Sicuro tells KDKA additional protective gear was given out like masks and gowns, but the firefighters do not feel it is enough protection. Now Sicuro and others are calling on state officials to provide firefighters with the information to protect the first responders. "Anybody's concern is that their job would put them in contact with potential patients or potentially infected patients with the (coronavirus)," Sicuro said. The city's first responders are calling on the state to provide someone within their department the names of patients who tested positive for the coronavirus in Pittsburgh. KDKA-TV CBS 2 PITTSBURGH California's Orange County first responders test new 911 call system to reduce potential COVID-19 exposure VIDEO: The novel coronavirus is changing the way first responders with the Orange County Fire Authority respond to calls. Crews demonstrated what it will look like in a mock call Tuesday. If it doesn't put a life at risk, dispatchers will screen callers. For patients showing symptoms of novel coronavirus, crews will wear their personal protective equipment. That's masks and gowns added to the usual gloves and goggles. Capt. Jason Fairchild with OCFA Incident Management Team said symptomatic patients will be asked to meet the responding crew outside. "When they take the 911 call, they're trying to direct people if they're able to walk and do so safely, we would like them to come outside," Fairchild said. All patients will get a mask right away just in case to reduce the risk of exposure to firefighters and the public. KABC-TV ABC 7 LOS ANGELES Agencies in Washington state take steps to protect their own following battalion chief's passing The death of Cowlitz 2 battalion chief Mickel Zainfeld has prompted local agencies and grassroots groups to boost efforts to help firefighters, police and other first responders cope with the emotional trauma of their jobs. And one way may be for both them and the public to tone down the superhero image they bear. "I think one of the big challenges is just the need for culture change," Cowlitz County chaplain Doug Fields said. "I think first responders are no different than the rest of the community. … There is still a stigma that if you ask for mental health (help), reach out to a counselor, therapist or pastor … somebody's going to think less of you." There are "years and years of history" of a culture around being tough and "getting over it and moving on" after hard calls, Fields said. Zainfeld, 41, took his own life September, and his death was officially declared work-related due to his diagnosis of work-related PTSD. THE DAILY NEWS Atlanta distillery shifts efforts by creating hand sanitizer for first responders Amidst the Coronavirus pandemic, Old Fourth Distillery has been distributing make-shift bottles of hand sanitizer. Starting today they are shifting their efforts and giving back to those on the front lines. We were able to play a small role in comforting people in this time of need," said Moore. Thousands of people liked, commented and shared his new initiative on social media. "Everybody has gotten together to support one another and that is just incredible," said Moore. At first Moore Was handing the hand sanitizer out to everyone, but as the crisis worsens, he's now only giving it to first responders. "Hospitals and the fire and the police and the sheriff's department," he explained. WGCL-TV CBS 46 ATLANTA PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
