VIDEO: Houston firefighter injured in 2-alarm house fire in Third Ward A Houston firefighter was injured while battling a house fire in the Third Ward. Firefighters were dispatched to a home on Palm Street near Paige around 3:11 a.m. Wednesday for a reported house fire. Flames were already shooting into the air by the time firefighters arrived to the scene. Houston fire officials said one firefighter sustained minor injuries when a wall collapsed at the home. He was transported to the hospital. Thankfully, officials say the firefighter is going to be OK. There were no other injuries reported, despite it being a two-alarm fire in the middle of the neighborhood. A neighbor told ABC13 they heard an explosion before seeing the flames. Firefighters said no one lives inside the home where the fire started, which was under construction. The home was completely destroyed. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Paramedic retires after lengthy career in Alice After a 40-plus-year plus career in the Emergency Medical Services, Roberto Garcia retired earlier this month. Garcia started his career at a young age, learning and forming relationships with first responders. "I started when my grandmother passed away. I saw my grandfather and my grandmother being wheeled out by EMS when they passed. My grandfather first, then a year later my grandmother," Garcia said. "One of the guys invited me to the station and I enjoyed it. Then when I was attending middle school a friend of mine said his dad owned an ambulance service and I was invited to go over. That became my home, I never left. I was there all the time." "I was 12 and now I'm 60. I learned off of them. It's funny cause I even took my state driver's license exam in an ambulance; that was when I worked with Roberson Ambulance Services," Garcia said. Garcia said things were different "back in the day." He was certified through standard first aid through the American Red Cross. ALICE ECHO-NEWS JOURNAL - METERED SITE Fire destroys northeast side home, 3 of 5 dogs still missing, San Antonio Fire Department says A blaze on the Northeast Side has destroyed a home, forcing its residents to evacuate and leaving firefighters searching for three pets early Wednesday morning, the San Antonio Fire Department said. The fire was called in around 6:15 a.m. at a home in the 4100 block of Moana Drive, not far from Eisenhauer Road and Loop 410. Firefighters said when they arrived, they found flames and smoke coming from the home. They were able to put the fire out quickly, and without incident. Fire officials said the home's three residents made it safely out. The house, however, has extensive damage and is now likely a total loss. The cause of the fire is not currently known. One of the men walked to an ambulance and firefighters say he had some smoke inhalation, so he will go to an area hospital. Another was carrying a dog in his arms and it appeared to be alive. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Calhoun County: Magnolia Beach Volunteer Fire Department set to host Chili Fest There's a chilly bite in the air, and soon you can have a bit of chili in the belly. The Magnolia Beach Volunteer Fire Department is hosting Chili Fest Saturday, March 5, to raise funds to buy equipment for the department. "People don't realize that it takes over $4,000 to outfit one firefighter," said Magnolia Beach VFD chief John Mayne. The department has 19 volunteers on its rolls, with 12 of those active, said Mayne. Four chefs will be cooking up their special brands of chili, and for $10, you can get a bowl with all the fixings such as cheese, crackers, Fritos, onions, and jalapeños to enjoy. Chili Fest starts at noon at the Fire Barn, 873 Margie Tewmey Road. Mayne said the department serves Magnolia Beach, Indianola, and Powderhorn, as well as assisting other volunteer departments and the Port Lavaca Fire Department. "We are busy," he said. PORT LAVACA WAVE Texas A&M Forest Service fire resources mobilized ahead of wildfire activity this weekend Increased wildfire activity will be supported Friday through Sunday by warm and dry conditions and critically dry vegetation in the Western Plains, Hill Country and Cross Timbers. A strong upper level storm approaching the state over the weekend will produce elevated to critical fire weather including above normal temperatures and increased wind speeds, which will increase the potential for large wildfires. "Any wildfire that ignites in dormant, cured grasses may spread rapidly due to the expected high wind speeds," said Brad Smith, Texas A&M Forest Service Predictive Services Department Head. "These wildfires may be more resistant to firefighters' suppression efforts." Texas A&M Forest Service is monitoring the situation closely and has mobilized personnel and equipment to areas of concern in advance of the potential wildfire activity this weekend. VIDEO: Home explodes in Missouri – No injuries reported A home exploded on Millers Court Tuesday afternoon in O'Fallon, Missouri. The St. Charles Ambulance District says that there are no injuries. The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation. Initial reports indicate that the fire department was called to the scene for a gas leak. First responders have the fire under control. There is not much remaining of the home. Two vehicles are burned up in what remains of the garage. The rest of the structure has been reduced to rubble. A contractor working in the area struck a gas line this afternoon, according to a statement from Spire. Workers immediately contacted Spire and the fire department. The fire department then evacuated homes in the area. Spire crews vented the gas out of the homes near the house that exploded. There are currently 19 homes without service in the neighborhood. It will take 4 to 6 hours to fix the line and return service to the homes. KTVI-TV FOX 2 ST. LOUIS City council confirms appointment of first woman to serve as chief in California fire department's 136-year history The Los Angeles City Council voted Tuesday to confirm the appointment of Deputy Chief Kristin Crowley who will become the first woman to lead the Los Angeles Fire Department. The appointment would be effective March 26, when Chief Ralph Terrazas is scheduled to retire. "I think it's so fitting for this nomination to come to council today, on the first day of Women's History Month,'' Council President Nury Martinez said. "Our city's fire department has gone 136 years without a woman in its highest office and today we're going to finally be able to turn the page.'' Crowley spoke before Tuesday's council vote. "I'm truly honored to be considered the nominee for the next fire chief of the Los Angeles city fire department and I am humbled and proud to have earned the opportunity to represent each and every one of our 3,779-strong civilian and sworn personnel of our department,'' Crowley told council members. KNBC-TV NBC 4 LOS ANGELES 47 years ago, ‘largest arson case' in country rocked a Connecticut city PHOTOS: Fire officials this week took to social media to remember a firebombing at a local mattress factory that the FBI classified at the time as the "largest arson case" nationwide. Tuesday marked 47 years since an enormous blaze ripped through the B.F. Goodrich Sponge Rubber mattress factory — now, the site of the city's riverwalk — in one of the biggest industrial arson cases to hit the nation. Fire officials from Shelton's Echo Hose Hook and Ladder Co. 1 said the fire was set by the factory owners in an effort to collect insurance money. About 700 firefighters from Shelton and surrounding areas battled the 200-foot flames for an estimated eight hours until the blaze was under control on the morning of March 2, 1975. "The FBI labeled it the largest arson case and peacetime bombing in the country," fire officials said Tuesday. NEW HAVEN REGISTER Colorado fire department debuts new emergency response system for 911 calls As of Tuesday, some Colorado Springs residents may hear something different when they call 911. "A unit will respond when a unit is available," call takers will say to residents in the south part of town who contact the emergency service for non-emergency situations — for example, when symptoms indicate the flu, a sprained ankle or a fractured hip. "This will be somewhat of a shift for the community," said Jayme McConnellogue, deputy chief of operations for the Colorado Springs Fire Department. Instead of immediately dispatching an ambulance, firetruck or other substantial vehicle, new Community Medicine Response Units — in medically outfitted SUVs that are on back order — will arrive at the scene. Emergency medical technicians will render aid and determine the best course of action, Fire Department officials said Tuesday, while announcing the start of the program at the agency's headquarters on Printers Parkway. THE GAZETTE - METERED SITE Ohio fire station undergoing emergency masonry project to avoid ‘catastrophic failure' Alarm of a different kind is what the Parma Heights Fire Department discovered late last year leading to emergency construction work at the Pearl Road fire station. "The fire station was inspected by a qualified construction company," Parma Heights Fire Chief Matt Bernard said. "It was under their recommendation that the building's structural integrity needed to be addressed before a catastrophic failure." Parma Heights City Council President Tom Rounds added, "The need for repair can't be ignored so appropriate money has been moved in the budget to address this situation." The winning bid for the estimated $80,900 masonry project, which includes the shoring and protection of the northern and southern overhead doors, went to Grunwell-Cashero.
