Spring Fire Department remembers district chief The Spring Fire Department held a memorial service for one of their district chiefs over the weekend, who died after serving with the department for 13 years. Shawn Babendure, 38, died July 19 after battling glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer, for nearly two years. In his memory, the Spring Fire Department hung up his bunker gear at Station 77, where he volunteered at. As a district chief, he helped lead volunteer firefighters with the Spring Fire Department. Spring Fire Chief Scott Seifert, who has known Babendure for 13 years since he first joined the department in 2007, called him one of the most passionate individuals he's ever met. "Everything he did he was passionate about; it was just 110 percent, everything he ever touched," Seifert said. "He was a good friend, just passionate about everything he did, his family. He had two adopted children and he just loved them to death." TJ Greenan, a full-time firefighter with the Spring Fire Department, said he had worked as a volunteer for nine years before transitioning, and worked alongside Babendure. HOUSTON CHRONICLE San Antonio looking to buy ‘armored medical vehicle' for fire department San Antonio firefighters could soon add an "armored medical vehicle" to their ranks even as public safety agencies across the United States undergo scrutiny for increasingly using military-style equipment, but officials here say they have been eyeing such a vehicle for years. "I look at this as a vehicle to save lives," Fire Chief Charles Hood said. "I look at this as a vehicle that can come to the rescue of someone that is pinned down by an active shooter, their neighbor's house is on fire, they can't get out." The city is taking bids from companies for an armored medical vehicle to be used by the San Antonio Fire Department, according to a post on the city's website. If San Antonio buys the vehicle, it would be an outlier among major Texas cities — Austin, Houston and Dallas don't have one. SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS NEWS - METERED SITE Funeral held in San Antonio for first Houston firefighter to die from COVID-19 VIDEO: A funeral was held Tuesday at Community Bible Church in San Antonio for the first Houston firefighter to die of COVID-19. Houston Fire Captain Leroy Lucio died July 20 at a San Antonio hospital following an almost month-long battle with the coronavirus. Lucio, a San Antonio native, was a 29-year veteran of the department. "Captain Lucio was a really, really, good people person. He was a good family man," said firefighter and friend, Mike Tullis. "It's going to be tough to replace a guy like him but life goes on," Tullis said. "We're are all destined for a day and time and only the good Lord knows what day that will be." KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Paramedic hurt as ambulance flips over on I-10 in east El Paso An ambulance flipped on its side in a wreck on Interstate 10 in east El Paso Monday afternoon, injuring one person. That ambulance, belonging to Life Ambulance Services, rolled over just before 1 p.m. along the interstate near the Yarbrough exit. Video captured by ABC-7 viewer Mario Sosa shows the scene as well as one of the two paramedics inside the ambulance who suffered non-serious injuries. (You can watch it in the video player at the top of this article.) He was taken to a hospital for treatment, fire officials indicated. What caused the vehicle to flip over was not immediately known, as police said it was under investigation. KVIA-TV 7 ABC EL PASO Couple displaced after trailer fire near Ingram A married couple was displaced by a fire that tore through their trailer today. The trailer was in the 100 block of Quaker Lane in the Armadillo Junction neighborhood, north of Ingram. As firefighters continued to work on hot spots and the smoke died down Tuesday afternoon, the trailer appeared to be a total loss. Local law enforcement officers were on scene interviewing witnesses. More information will be released as the investigation proceeds. When the fire started, only the wife was home, and she ran outside to see what was happening after she saw smoke, according to a neighbor. She screamed and called 911, he said. She wasn't able to get good reception, but he called 911 and was able to communicate with the dispatcher, he said. The Ingram area is known for being problematic when it comes to cell service. KERRVILLE DAILY TIMES Update: Firefighter Matt Dawson to return to Lubbock next month VIDEO: Matt Dawson has been approved to return to Lubbock August 13, according to an update posted to the DawsonStrong927 Facebook page. Dawson was critically injured in the crash that killed LPD Officer Nicholas Reyna and Fire Lieutenant Eric Hill on Jan. 11. Dawson was airlifted to Craig Hospital in Denver, Colorado nearly five months ago. The family says since undergoing treatment at the facility, at this time he will not need a shunt and his last CT scan "showed the ventricles to be at a good size indicating they are draining properly." 93.7 THE EAGLE PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Fire breaks out after train derailment, bridge collapse over Arizona lake VIDEO: A bridge over Tempe Town Lake has caught on fire and partially collapsed after a train derailed. Tempe Fire Department officials say the derailment happened around 6 a.m. on July 29 and involved a Union Pacific train. At least 90 firefighters are on the scene. One person is being treated of smoke inhalation, officials say. Officials with Union Pacific say eight to ten rail cars caught on fire. Three tank cars fell into the park below; two of them contained cyclohexanone with the third containing a rubber material. Cyclohexanone is a flammable, colorless oily liquid, and nearly 95% of its manufacturing is used to make nylon, according to the National Library of Medicine. None of the rail cars are reported leaking, and the cause of the derailment is under investigation. The bridge had recieved its yearly inspection on July 9, train officials say. KSAZ-TV FOX 10 PHOENIX Two Studies Suggest 9/11 First Responders at Greater Risk of Dementia World Trade Center (WTC) first responders are at risk for developing dementia, according to two studies led by Stony Brook University researchers and presented virtually at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference on July 28, 2020. The studies included individuals with signs of cognitive impairment (CI) who show neuroradiological abnormalities and changes in their blood similar to that seen in Alzheimer's disease patients and those with related dementias. One study in Alzheimer's and Dementia: Diagnosis, Assessment and Disease Monitoring (DADM) shows that many responders with CI have reduced gray matter thickness in the brain consistent with neurodegenerative conditions and evidence their brain "age" is about 10 years older on average than the normal population. This research is in collaboration with scientists at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. TECHNOLOGY NETWORKS Limited availability of fire hydrants creates frequent issues for Nevada firefighters Easy access to fire hydrants is a requirement of every city's building codes, but Reno Fire Department says depending on the location and type of fire, getting to fire hydrants can be extremely difficult. Last week a south Reno apartment complex was engulfed in flames, destroying 14 of 21 buildings. No one was injured in the vacant building blaze, but RFD Battalion Chief Jeff Voskamp said water was particularly hard to access for crews to put out flames. "You had Geiger Grade and Veterans Parkway," said Voskamp. "So we place hydrants where buildings are actually at, not necessarily on streets. Two hydrants were able to be accessed, the other ones were basically in the middle of the fire ground." Voskamp said firefighters were eventually able to attach eight different fire hydrants to hoses to battle the blaze, but crews had to go through backyards, across streets, and into other neighborhoods to access them. KRNV-DT NBC 4 RENO ‘It's OK to not be OK': Florida fire department leaders push for increased mental health screenings for first responders Local fire department leaders are speaking out about the calls to increase mental health screenings for first responders following the overdose death of a Winter Park EMS captain. Winter Park fire Capt. A.J. Isaacs overdosed on painkillers, which were stolen from his own department. "I know, without a doubt, there's definitely PTSD within the fire service," his widow, Heather Isaacs, said. It's something local departments recognize and try to prevent. "As firefighters, we're taught and we're trained to be professional in every situation and dealing with these types of incidents through the years, we've learned to push our emotions to the background," Orange County Fire Rescue Safety and Wellness Chief Antonio Demings said. OCFR revamped its behavioral health program a few years ago to include daily call for service reviews and regular chaplain visits to crew members in order to identify potential trauma early on. WFTV ABC 9 NEWS ORLANDO Federal coronavirus 'red zone' of severe outbreaks expands to 21 total states Florida on Tuesday hit a new statewide record high for number of coronavirus deaths reported in a single day since the pandemic began — 186 residents. And while there are signs hospitalizations may be leveling off, the virus continues to upend life there and across the country. Nearly half of all states are now part of the government's so-called "red zone" due to rising cases, including Missouri, North Dakota and Wisconsin. Dr. Deborah Birx on Tuesday said hot spots threaten regions where cases are controlled. "We can see the virus moving North," she warned. "What we're seeing across the South right now is both rural infections, as well as small metros and major metros, simultaneously." Birx said. This week, Dr. Birx was in five states where cases are on the rise and recommended that some states close bars and limit capacity. CBS NEWS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
