Granite Shoals firefighter critically injured during off-duty fire rescue A local hero is barely hanging on to life after pulling a person from a burning building while off-duty Tuesday. Dustin Short, a firefighter and EMT with the Granite Shoals Fire Rescue was critically injured after successfully rescuing a person from a burning structure. Granite Shoals is in Burnet County on the northern edge of Lake LBJ. Since Short was off duty, he didn't have any protective gear on at the time of the rescue, which resulted in him sustaining serious lung injuries due to elevated temperatures present in the building. Currently, Short is being mechanically ventilated while his lung injuries are treated. He remains in serious but stable condition at a local trauma center. The individual who he saved is reported not to be critically injured. The firefighter's family is asking for privacy as they adjust to the current circumstances. KEYE CBS 42 AUSTIN Austin EMS Association says medics are working at capacity, fear shortage of ambulances due to COVID-19 The Austin EMS Association is worried there aren't enough ambulances in the city to quickly respond to emergencies. Leadership representing the medics of Austin/Travis County EMS said they were disappointed they didn't see any new vehicles in the budget released on Monday. "We are seeing at least 50 calls per day that are related to COVID-19," said Austin EMS Association President Selena Xie. Xie said at one point last Friday, 32 of the 33 ambulances in the entire county were unavailable. They were either in service, being decontaminated or going to the hospital. She said the pandemic has led to a higher call volume and long response times. Medics also have to spend more time dealing with PPE issues and heat exhaustion brought on by the extra equipment. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN 2 dogs die in White Oak mobile home fire PHOTO: Two dogs died after being trapped in an East Texas mobile home fire. It happened in the 1300 block of North Whatley Road in White Oak around 11:30 am. White Oak Fire Chief Jimmy Purcell tells us the home was fully involved when firefighters arrived on scene. No one was home at the time of the fire. It took firefighters about a half hour to extinguish the fire. The home was a total loss. We're told the mobile home didn't have electricity although there were people staying there. Gladewater, Clarksville-Warren City and White Oak responded to the fire. The cause is under investigation. KLTV-TV ABC 7 TYLER East Concho Valley volunteer firefighters are asking the community for help The definition of volunteer is a person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task. When comes to the word "volunteer," the first thing in the minds of many are volunteer firefighters. Some of these volunteers have been battling fire for five or 10 years, and sometimes the hardest battles they face are not the fires raging across West Texas, but the trying to replace important equipment. No one knows that feeling more than East Concho Valley Volunteer Fire Chief Dennis Thompson. "We have to rely on donations and fundraising," Thompson said. "It's hard to get any kind of grants that we use." Many fundraisers Thompson and his team would conduct were canceled because of COVID-19. He said a majority of the funds they get come from the community participating in fundraisers. KXVA/KIDY-TV FOX ABILENE/SAN ANGELO Harris County adds COVID-19 compliance monitors to keep up with safety complaints The Harris County Fire Marshal's Office has added a new team of members to keep up with COVID-19 compliance complaints. Rachel Neutzler, who is the director of communications for the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office, said the office is averaging 60 to 70 complaints a day now dealing with COVID-19 safety violations. "So, we have two different kinds of complaints that we're getting. One in regards to the Governor's order which are the 50 percent occupancies in restaurants and other businesses, the second kind of complaints we get are Harris County's health and safety mask order, which are where businesses are required to post health and safety signage, have a health and safety policy, and require all consumers that come in their stores to wear a mask." KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Lake Cities firefighter gets outpouring of support after amputation Troy Hammons leads an active life. When the Celina resident isn't working as a captain with the Lake Cities Fire Department, he volunteers with the North Shore Fire Department. Friend and fellow firefighter Battalion Chief Jeromy Porter of the Frisco Fire Department recalled that Hammons, a skilled mechanic, would also work on fixing broken fire trucks and other projects on his days off. Porter also mentioned that Hammons was part of putting together an annual rodeo to raise money for a fellow member with a special needs child. "He would just really help anybody that needed help," Porter said, "and now he's the one that needs help, so everybody's reaching out." Hammons developed an infection from a muscle tear in his left calf. Within one week, the infection turned into staph, his wife Raychel said. A week later, the staph infection had turned into a flesh-eating bacteria. After having seven surgeries to try to save his leg, Hammons heard the news that he would have to undergo a belo w-the-knee amputation on his left leg. Could These Firefighting Robots Have Saved The Navy's USS Bonhomme Richard? The fire that broke out on the USS Bonhomme Richard on Sunday was still burning at the time of writing. The blaze has caused at least 20 casualties, and the fate of the ship is unclear, with Navy officials stating it was too soon to say if the vessel will be salvageable. But new firefighting technology might have stopped the fire before it ran out of control. Fire is the biggest hazard for warships. Compartmentalized bulkheads make modern vessels unlikely to sink even if holed below the waterline. During WWII, only one U.S. carrier was sunk, but four were lost to fire. As with Bonhomme Richard, the ammunition and aviation fuel on board made them especially vulnerable to catastrophe. Swedish company Unifire say their FlameRanger could make a difference. Claimed to be the most sophisticated robotic firefighting system in the world, FlameRanger comprises sensors linked to nozzles on robotic arms. FORBES Police: Man with HIV spits on Florida firefighter, charged with criminal transmission of virus A Daytona Beach man positive with HIV was accused of passing on the virus by spitting on a South Daytona firefighter-paramedic, police said. Julio Rivera, 41, who was being investigated in a domestic violence case on Tuesday, was charged with criminal transmission of HIV, battery on a firefighter by way of spitting, domestic violence battery, resisting arrest without violence, fleeing and attempting to elude police, giving a false name, unlawful possession of molly/ecstasy, possession of drug paraphernalia, and grand theft. Rivera was being held in the Volusia County Branch Jail on Wednesday without bail. South Daytona police were called to a domestic disturbance at a South Palmetto Avenue home where Rivera's girlfriend reported being battered. Rivera then fled on a bicycle, police said. An officer spotted Rivera and ordered him to stop but Rivera pedaled faster. The officer exited his patrol car and ran after Rivera, a report states. THE DAYTONA BEACH NEWS-JOURNAL Indiana fire department moving ahead with union's diversity, inclusion training Evansville Fire officials are forging ahead with a diversity and inclusion training program from the firefighters' union. The move comes months after a fire inspector's use of a racist slur on the job pushed issues of race in the department into the headlines. A diversity sub-committee set up by the Evansville Fire Department Merit Commission will undergo a five-hour virtual training next week with the International Association of Fire Fighters, Fire Chief Mike Connelly announced at a commission meeting Tuesday afternoon. It's the first step in a three-step process developed by the IAFF. The program costs the city nothing, instead paid for by firefighters' union dues. The IAFF program consists of three separate modules, Larry Zuber, president of the Evansville Professional Firefighters Local 357, explained in an earlier interview. The first module focuses on training department officials on the best methods for recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Body by burpees: North Carolina firefighter sets Guinness World Record in the gym VIDEO: A Raleigh firefighter is an unofficial Guinness World Record holder, pending paperwork. 5,297. That's how many burpees Nick Christopoulos said he did on Sunday in an un-air-conditioned gym. "It was as it sounds, awful...yeah." His venture to hold the title started simply enough- for every call at his firehouse, he'd do 100 burpees. "The day I started, I did 1,300 in one day." The 30-year-old's endurance appears to be genetic. One of his brothers is also a firefighter and Ultra Marathoner. His other brother is a minor league hockey player. Originally, Christopoulos wanted to set the record at his fire station, but COVID-19 slammed the door on that. Instead, a friend offered up their gym. Christopoulos says that since he started his journey for the title, the record had been broken twice - adding 600 more burpees than previously expected. WTVD ABC 11 RALEIGH PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
