Midland City Council approves $9M in construction costs for fire stations The Midland City Council on Tuesday approved the $9.455 million in construction costs for two fire stations. The contracts awarded to MW Builders are for fire stations in central and northwest Midland. City documents show that including construction costs and other past and future expenses, a total appropriation of $11.496 million has been set. Of that money, $9 million is coming from certificates of obligation, which is council-approved debt. The fire stations are Nos. 5 and 11. Fire Station 5, at 2210 W. Golf Course Road, will be a two-story structure, totaling 11,752 square feet. Fire Station 11, at 6600 Briarwood Ave., is a one-story structure that is 13,208 square feet, according to a previous Reporter-Telegram article. Fire Chief Charles Blumenauer said Tuesday both stations provide current and future help in protecting the community and helping to keep the city's safety rating intact. MIDLAND REPORTER-TELEGRAM Indorama Port Neches plant says 'transformer explosion' caused fire, no danger to facility or community An Entergy sub station inside the Indorama plant in Port Neches had a 'transformer explosion' and fire on Tuesday evening according to a company spokesperson. The Indorama facility was formerly known as Huntsman. The sub station 'bulk distribution yard' is in an Entergy 'easement' at the facility, and provides power to Port Neches, Groves and some of the plant according to the company. The plant's fire brigade and the Port Neches Fire Department have been called to the scene. Some units have been 'taken offline,' but the there is no danger to the facility or surrounding community according to the spokesperson. No injuries have been reported. Jefferson County Judge Jeff Branick says he heard the explosion at his house and could see black smoke rising. He says all personnel at the plant are accounted for. KBMT-TV ABC 12 BEAUMONT Holcomb Road Wildfire Still Smoldering After Ten Days The Holcomb Road Wildfire is nearly out after burning more than 20,000 acres of land in Crockett and Val Verde counties. As previously reported on Sunday, April 19, firefighters with the Texas A&M Forest Service were called in to fight a wildfire along with Crockett County firefighters near Holcomb Road at around 7 p.m. Sunday. After the initial reports the fire grew to it's largest size at nearly 26,500 acres on April 23. The following day TAMFS reported that crews suppressed the fire down to 21,043 acres and got it at 25% contained. This is the day that crews completely set up the perimeter and began to control the fire. On April 27 the TAMFS stated that the fire containment was at 45% and that the fire was 25,958 acres. SAN ANGELO LIVE Comparing Abilene Fire Department's number of COVID-19 cases with other fire departments in Texas Over 40 Abilene fire fighters have tested positive for COVID-19. How does that compare to other cities in Texas? As of Monday, fire departments in Dallas and San Antonio each have six. In Austin, there is just one positive case. What about cities in comparable size to Abilene? The San Angelo Fire Department has no positive cases. Neither do fire departments in Wichita Falls or Lubbock. We asked Abilene Fire Chief Cande Flores why Abilene's numbers are higher. "I think we are seeing our guys tested and we're seeing those different antibodies show up because everyone's exposed to it," said Flores. "We're not being tested on a regular basis." Neither Flores or the City are mandating all fire personnel get tested even though 21-percent of the department has tested positive. KTXS-TV ABC 12 ABILENE Helpline aims to assist first responders statewide battling mental health, substance disorders First responders in Texas can now call a confidential phone number to seek treatment for substance use and mental health disorders. It is set up through the HEROES Program at UTHealth. Firefighters, police and paramedics take an oath to honor, serve and protect. Sometimes, that means putting their own lives in danger. But as a UTHealth professor and director of HEROES, Dr. James Langabeer said first responders can also be the most vulnerable. "We're really good with jumping in and fighting a fire, picking up after a great flood. We know we can send people in, but then this (pandemic) is going on a long time and it creates a lot of stress in everybody's minds," Langabeer said. A 2017 study conducted by the University of Phoenix on the mental health of first responders revealed firefighters, police officers and paramedics are struggling with mental health issues. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Small plane plunges into Canyon Lake Investigators are looking into what caused the crash of a single-engine plane, which lost power before it skidded into Canyon Lake Tuesday morning. First responders quickly arrived at the scene of the accident, which happened at a cove near the Westhaven subdivision on the south side of the lake around 10 a.m. "The call came in from the 100 block of Canteen in Canyon Lake," said Jennifer Smith, Comal County Sheriff's Office public information officer. "A small Cessna plane was found submerged under the water, with the two occupants able to swim to shore." Smith said the men were flying from Midland to New Braunfels Regional Airport. Visiting from Dallas, Ed Sanford, touring his old neighborhood with his girlfriend Lisa Wyatt, said they saw a plane flying low across the peninsula leading into the cove. $10B sought in next stimulus bill for nation's fire departments in need of PPE, funding Some fire departments around the country are growing desperate for more personal protective equipment and funding to fully operate during this pandemic. While most departments in the D.C. area say they have what they need, some recognize the possibility of running out. Some fire departments around the U.S. have been forced to get creative when it comes to protecting fire and EMS workers on the front lines. For example, some firefighters in Phoenix, AZ have been spotted wearing ponchos. Others have been seen handling COVID-19 patients without gowns. Gary Ludwig, an Illinois fire chief and president of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, said fire departments should not have to go through this. "Right now, I can't say that we feel like a priority," Ludwig said. WDVM-TV CBS 25 HAGERSTOWN Data Science Wizards Tell Us What's Really Happening With Coronavirus The global curve is flattening, but COVID-19 (coronavirus) infections are still rising and new hotspots, like Brazil, may be emerging. That's a big improvement from weeks of dire, exponential growth across the world. But global or even U.S.-wide stats are difficult to parse when you're trying to figure out if the local situation in your town and state is getting better or worse. Fortunately, a mix of leading data visualization specialists and passionate scientists have crunched the numbers on COVID-19 (healthcare statistics being compiled by the likes of Johns Hopkins or the New York Times) for graphs and visualizations that help shed light on the spread of the virus. Find out how well your county is battling the outbreak compared to others, or whether a state is really flattening its curve, or maybe more importantly, how flat the curve needs to get. POPULAR MECHANICS Editorial: Health care suicides are another tragic toll of the coronavirus pandemic "She tried to do her job, and it killed her": So said Dr. Philip Breen of his daughter, Dr. Lorna Breen, the medical director of the emergency department at New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital — who died by suicide Sunday in Charlottesville, Va., where she was staying with family. Her work amid the coronavirus pandemic took such a toll. "She was truly in the trenches of the front line," he told The New York Times. "Make sure she's praised as a hero, because she was. She's a casualty just as much as anyone else who died." Not only did Lorna Breen care for patients affected by COVID-19; she was infected herself — then tried to go back to work after recuperating for a week and a half. Her hospital sent her home again, and her family brought her to Charlottesville. Breen isn't the only frontliner to take her own life after witnessing the horrors of the coronavirus firsthand: A rookie Bronx EMT, John Mondello, killed himself Friday after less than three months on the job, police sources told The Post. NEW YORK POST Mattel honors workers leading fight against COVID-19 with special edition #ThankYouHeroes collection Mattel is honoring essential workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 fight with a special edition #ThankYouHeroes collection from Fisher-Price. The collection will include sixteen different figures that will be a selection of doctors, nurses, EMTs and delivery drivers. Mattel will also offer a special five-character Little People set that includes a grocery store worker figure. "#ThankYouHeroes is designed to immortalize and honor healthcare workers and every day heroes," Chuck Scothon, Senior Vice President of Fisher-Price and global head of Infant and Preschool at Mattel said. "Whether these toys are given as a gift to recognize someone working on the front lines, or used as a tool to help children have a conversation about how they're feeling, it is our hope that Fisher-Price toys, and play in general, can ultimately make these difficult times easier for both kids and adults."
