Author: Mark Niemeyer, WFCA President & Fire Chief, Boise Fire Department
The Western Fire Chiefs Association proudly announces its endorsement of Fire Chief Dan Munsey for the position of 2nd Vice President of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC). Chief Munsey, with his extensive experience and unwavering commitment to the fire service, embodies the values and leadership qualities crucial for advancing the IAFC's mission. And, his dedication to promoting innovative solutions as well as highlighting our collective fire service needs aligns seamlessly with the goals of the WFCA and IAFC.

One woman is dead after a fire broke out at a residence near Caldwell Zoo. According to the Tyler Fire Department, Mynetta Gilstrap, 68, died at hospital after being rescued from a house fire. Thick smoke could be seen pouring out of a house in the 1700 block of West Mims Street east of the zoo. According to the fire department, the initial call came in around 9:50 a.m. and indicated flames were visible from the front of the home. Tyler police and EMS also responded to the call. Tyler firefighters were searching the house while attacking the fire when they found Gilstrap, as well as a dog that was deceased. According to Tyler fire officials, the fire was extinguished around 10:30 a.m. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Olden Volunteer Fire Department says now is the time to upgrade their oldest tanker from 1990. "The current tanker is a 1,000-gallon tanker that has very limited pumping capabilities," said Stephen Forbes. "It was a converted ice cream truck that the department converted over into our tanker." Stephen Forbes is the fire chief at the Olden Volunteer Fire Department and he says that after ten years, they are financially confident for the change. "After ten years of trying, the department was able to get a $240,000 grant from the Texas Forest Service," said Chief Forbes. "With that, we felt like 'okay this is a possible do if we can gather some funds from other areas.'" The department is committing to putting in $86,000 towards the almost $452,000 purchase and the rest will be fundraised.

VIDEO: The Midland County Northeast Volunteer Fire Department helps Midland County in numerous ways, all on a volunteer basis. And all month of April, they'll be helping people sporting these puzzle-pieced helmets. "It was like, hey, you know, April's Autism Awareness Month," Chief Jason Duran said. "Why don't we do something to help support or show our respect?" "All firefighters are prideful," Assistant Chief James Wolf said. "We all have helmets of course. This one is the Autism Awareness puzzle pieces with our number and then you know Northeast and our name. This is a more personalized style that we've started [it] makes our members more unique, gives them a little bit more pride in what they wear, but then it also allows us to be a voice."

San Antonio firefighters say lightning strikes caused two fires overnight at an apartment complex and a home. At a North Side apartment complex in the 11800 block of Braesview, San Antonio Fire Department said a lightning strike caused a fire in a utility area. The flames then spread to an attic. Four units were affected and 12 residents were displaced, according to SAFD. No one was injured. At a Northwest Side home in the 5800 block of Trent Ranch, a lightning strike caused a small fire in the attic just after midnight Wednesday. SAFD said no one was injured. At this time it is unknown if residents were displaced. There was no estimated cost of damage.

VIDEO: On Monday, a soybean dryer caught fire at Gibson City's IFF plant. From fearless fire crews to generous community members, all hands were on deck. Firefighters are using some heavy-duty equipment to get inside of the soybean dryer. They said it took hours to put out the flames, and on Tuesday, they were keeping a close eye on it since the facility was still smoldering. People made sure first responders had food and were staying hydrated for the seven-hour ordeal. Gibson City has seen their fair share of fires in the past couple of years. A downtown building burned down in 2022, and last year a fire tore through an apartment building on the same street. Fire Chief Bruce Kallal said they arrived at the scene just before 1 p.m., and the giant structure made the fire tough to battle. Firefighters had to use long ladders just to reach the flames. They got help from nine other departments.

Six years ago, the Santa Clara County Fire Department was battling one of the largest wildfires ever to break out in California, the Mendocino Complex fire. With thousands of firefighters on the front line, county officials needed to coordinate fire suppression efforts at multiple points. But they ran into a major roadblock. Their wireless internet had slowed down to a crawl, making it virtually impossible to send or receive emergency communications. Verizon had throttled the internet speed to a fraction of what it was before and then refused to restore it unless the county upgraded to a more expensive data plan, after it had reached its data cap. To put an end to these practices, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is proposing a policy change that would restore national standards of net neutrality and bring back more consumer protections, reliability and security to broadband connections.

An Iowa man who missed a share of Saturday's $1.3 billion Powerball jackpot by just one number has claimed his consolation prize. Trent Baker, a 37-year-old firefighter from Newton, matched the first five numbers of Saturday's drawing (22-27-44-52-69), but missed the Powerball (9). He's one of seven players across the county to do so, winning $1 million. He claimed his prize Monday afternoon at Iowa Lottery's headquarters in Clive. In a news release from the Iowa Lottery, Baker said he was up early for work on Sunday morning when he decided to use the Iowa Lottery app on his mobile phone to check the results of the five Powerball tickets he'd bought the night before. His phone dinged on the second ticket he checked, indicating that it was a winner.

VIDEO: Norfolk Southern has agreed to pay $600 million in a class-action lawsuit settlement related to last year's fiery train derailment that affected East Palestine, Ohio. The company said Tuesday that the agreement, if approved by the court, will resolve all class action claims within a 20-mile radius from the derailment and, for those residents who choose to participate, personal injury claims within a 10-mile radius from the derailment. About 50 cars of the freight train — which had roughly 150 cars and three locomotives — derailed on the outskirts of East Palestine, near the Pennsylvania state line, with some cars transporting hazardous materials. An evacuation covered 1,500 to 2,000 of the town's approximately 4,800 to 4,900 residents.
