Mario Partida named Missouri City's next fire chief City Manager Odis Jones selected Mario Paritda to be the chief of Missouri City's Fire and Rescue Services Department. City Council unanimously approved this decision during its April 5 meeting. Partida brings 26 years of fire service experience to the role. He joined the city of Missouri City in 2019 as assistant fire chief and was promoted to acting fire chief in 2020, according to a press release from the city. "[Partida] has provided exceptional management of the Fire & Rescue Services Department in day-to-day operations during the COVID-19 pandemic and during the severe weather winter storm in February," Jones said. "The city conducted a nationwide search for this executive position and I am confident that Chief Partida is the best candidate to serve the City and that he will be an engaging and great partner for our citizen outreach initiatives." COMMUNITY IMPACT - MISSOURI CITY One dead after trailer fire in Amarillo According to the Amarillo Fire Department, one man has died after a Camper trailer was engulfed in flame early this morning. The Amarillo Fire Department said that firefighters were sent to a reported trash fire around Morning Drive and Central at around 6 a.m. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found the trailer "fully involved in fire." Said the report, "After the initial knock-down of the fire, Firefighters made entry into the structure and discovered the body of a deceased male. It appears that he was homeless and seeking shelter inside the camper trailer." The fire is still under investigation. No other injuries were reported. According to station crew, responders are still on the scene investigating the incident. Drivers are advised to take a different route past the area, if possible, and be mindful of emergency vehicles. KCIT-TV FOX 14 AMARILLO Crane restaurant catches fire VIDEO: My Friends Grill in Crane is gone after a fire ignited early Tuesday morning. Decades of cherished memories gone in just a few minutes. The restaurant's owner Norma Pinado was taken by surprise when she was called here soon after the fire started burning. "I figured it was just going to be something that we could come in and put out with a fire extinguisher," Pinado said. "I didn't imagine it to be this at all." Unfortunately not. The fire got out of control too fast for the fire crews to stop it before the building crumbled and everything inside was lost. Pinado said it's sad to see the restaurant perish like this. It's been a Crane staple since 1986 and all these years countless people have found a home there either as an employee or a customer. KOSA-TV CBS 7 ODESSA Alpine aviation resources prepositioned in state for wildfire response as warm, dry conditions are expected this week Texas A&M Forest Service has opened a single engine air tanker base in Alpine, Texas to assist with wildfire response across the state. Persistent drought, cured grasses, above normal temperatures and elevated to critical fire weather will produce conditions conducive to increased fire activity from the Big Bend region to the Midland/Odessa area on Tuesday and Wednesday. This same area will likely experience consecutive days of strong drying in vegetation through the end of the week, resulting in critically dry fuels for the weekend. In areas east of Childress, San Angelo and Abilene, the fire environment will be less receptive to wildfire activity due to the onset of greening grasses. However, severe to exceptional drought continues for South Texas where cured and above-normal amounts of grass will support fire activity. THE GILMER MIRROR Forest Service adding supervisors to manage responses for Panhandle fire dangers The Forest Service is adding some supervisors to manage response in the Panhandle due to approaching increased fire danger. Dry, windy weather has promoted state fire officials to add wildfire incident commanders to the staff and equipment already in the Panhandle. Texas A&M Forest Service spokesman James DeGrazia said the department is preparing for the expanded fire threat in West Texas over the next few days. Locally, the means adding up to four people to oversee responses. The service is also urging people to take personal responsibility for preventing and containing fires to protect family and property. "It is the responsibility of each individual resident to prepare their home for wildfires," said Kari Hines, Texas A&M Forest Service Firewise coordinator. KFDA-TV CBS 10 AMARILLO Firefighters gathering in College Station for statewide conference Firefighters from across the state are in College Station this week for a special conference. The Texas Fire Chief's Association Annual Conference is happening at the Texas A&M Hotel and Conference Center. Hundreds of rooms are booked in town and as a result, giving the area an economic boost. During the conference, fire chiefs will participate in meetings and breakout sessions and look at new tools and equipment for their work. "Conferences like this are really important for us to be able to share our experiences with each other to learn from each other," said Chief Richard Mann of the College Station Fire Department. "To bring in some subject matter experts on different topics that are developing and growing in the fire service, so these are just a great forum for us to be able to get together and not just learn in the sessions, but to network with each other so that we can call on each other." 21 injured, including 16 firefighters, in New York apartment building fire VIDEO: An eight-alarm fire tore through an apartment building in Queens Tuesday afternoon, leaving 21 injured, including 16 firefighters, and displacing more than 200 residents. The fire broke out as four-alarm blaze on the top floor of the six-story building on 34th Avenue in Jackson Heights around 1 p.m. and quickly spread into the cockloft. Approximately 400 FDNY members responded and continue to fight the ferocious fire. Officials say the FDNY will be at the scene through the night and the next few days. "When the units arrived, the door of apartment was open, there was an advanced fire," FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said. "The first units in were trying to make their advance, three of the members were burned. Thankfully the burns were not serious, although they have been taken to the hospital." WABC-TV ABC 7 NEW YORK Related YouTube Video: FDNY Queens 8th Alarm fire Pointing to the Future of Lifesaving Firefighting Technology Six firefighters lost their lives responding to a fire in a century-old, abandoned warehouse in Worcester, Massachusetts, in December 1999. Worried that civilians were trapped inside, rescue teams initiated a rapid intervention; but, unfamiliar with the layout of the building, the smoke-filled warehouse became a labyrinth for those that entered. Unfortunately, the brave individuals that answered this call were unable to locate any exits before they ran out of air. We still remember them more than two decades later, and this incident—along with hundreds in the years since—served as the catalyst for groundbreaking new Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) tracking and location technology. Precision Outdoor and Indoor Navigation and Tracking for Emergency Responders (POINTER) will soon allow agencies to pinpoint their firefighters to within centimeters, helping to navigate them quickly and safely out of potentially disorienting emergency scenarios. HOMELAND SECURITY TODAY Pennsylvania city partnering with public schools to recruit more women and minority firefighters VIDEO: There are big changes coming to the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire, which include recruiting more women and minorities at Pittsburgh Westinghouse High School. When Mark Black puts on firefighting gear and trains to one day become a firefighter after completing the Career and Technical Education program at Pittsburgh Westinghouse High School, he hopes more female firefighters will be by his side. Black said, "I feel great about them recruiting more women." The city of Pittsburgh is reaching out to high school students, as part of a plan to bring more minorities and women into the Pittsburgh bureau of fire. Matthew Patrick teaches the class to help train future firefighters. He said there will be a female focus firefighting youth camp and young girls make up almost half of his class. Patrick said, "It just excites me beyond belief, seeing them have this opportunity now. I wish I had it when I was in high school." WTAE-TV ABC 4 PITTSBURGH Bill introduced to give North Carolina firefighters financial help when battling occupationally-related cancer North Carolina firefighters remain cautiously optimistic as two Senate Republicans introduced bill to provide financial assistance for cancer treatment. For the past several years, firefighters across the state have been fighting to get presumptive cancer coverage expanded for themselves and their colleagues. While other states in the U.S. have some sort of cancer coverage, North Carolina does not. In fact, it is the only state in the country to not have some sort of presumptive cancer coverage for these first responders. "First in flight, last in helping firefighters," is how Greensboro Firefighters Union President Dave Coker describes the fight. Senate Bill 472 was introduced on April 1, by Senator Todd Johnson and Senate Majority Whip Jim Perry. The bill, as written, would see that a trust worth $25,000 would be set aside for North Carolina firefighters. WGHP-TV FOX 8 HIGH POINT Five states account for 43% of the country's new COVID-19 cases in the past week Just five states have accounted for about 43% of new coronavirus cases over the last week, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. New York, Michigan, Florida, Pennsylvania and New Jersey had for more than 196,400 of the country's 453,360 cases reported in the last week, according to data available Wednesday morning. Those states are home to just 22% of the US population, according to estimates from the US Census Bureau. Case rates have risen especially in Michigan lately, averaging more than 6,600 cases a day over a week now against 1,350 daily cases five weeks ago. And elected officials and health experts have said highly contagious variants such as B.1.1.7 have helped spur increases there and in other parts of the country. Though vaccination rates have increased nationally, not enough people have been inoculated to outpace the spread. And with more-transmissible variants spreading, surges like Michigan's may soon be seen more widely, epidemiologist Dr. Michael Osterholm said. CNN PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
