Two flown to hospital after elderly couple's home exploded in Fayette County Two people were flown to the hospital after a home explosion and fire in Fayette County Tuesday morning. According to Fayette County Chief of Emergency Management Craig Moreau, an elderly couple's home in Ellinger exploded around 6:44 a.m. Fire officials at the scene believe it's a propane explosion. The couple was severely injured and sent to a local hospital. The blast was felt by residents as far as three miles away. There is a "huge power plant" nearby, but there is no connection to the explosion. KVUE-TV ABC 24 AUSTIN Christus paramedic with COVID-19 hospitalized for weeks, on ventilator As a first responder for 30 years, Stephen Finley has served others as a "gentle giant." But now he's the one who's needed care, as he's spent weeks hospitalized and almost as long on a ventilator after being diagnosed with COVID-19. Finley is a paramedic for Christus EMS stationed in Wills Point. He retired from the Plano Fire Department in 2010. His wife of 18 years, Jaime Finley, who is a firefighter and EMT for the city of Mineola, said it's been challenging to be on the other side of things. "He's like a super likeable guy," Jaime said. "I know he's a great guy, but it's really nice to hear these things from complete strangers." People who know Steve will refer to him as a gentle giant because of his servant heart, she said. "He really has a gift, and I really want him to get better so he can use that gift," Jaime said. Jaime said Steve started feeling bad toward the end of a trip to their son's house in Florida. They initially believed it was a sinus infection or something minor. LONGVIEW NEWS-JOURNAL - METERED SITE San Antonio College is online, except for courses that can't work that way Under a slowly rising sun and oppressive heat Thursday morning, Jacqueline Garcia pulled down her mask to take a sip of water from her jug during a break in her firefighter training course. With the rest of her covered in thick protective equipment and sweat beading on her face, the return to in-person learning was going to take some getting used to. "From the beginning, they said it wasn't going to be easy," said Garcia, 25. "It's a little different because we're not used to such intense training already, so having to take all the extra precautions, it's, you know, different." Garcia is one of about 65 firefighter cadets and 100 law enforcement cadets training at San Antonio College's First Responders Academy in Atascosa, a rural community in Southwest Bexar County. SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS NEWS New hand sanitizer warning after Austin woman was burned in house fire The small step of hand sanitizing that has become part of our daily routines could pose a potential danger, fire safety experts warn. Kate Wise, a mother of three from Austin, Texas, is recovering after her house went up in flames when she said she used an off-brand hand sanitizer before she lit a candle at her home. "The explosion happened in a matter of two seconds with my entire body on fire," Wise told ABC News. "And I heard my daughters screaming 'mom's on fire, mom's on fire.'" The explosion that burned 18% of her body miraculously did not harm her children. Wise's two youngest daughters managed to escape unharmed while she fought off the flames to save her teenage daughter with cerebral palsy. "I knew even in the chaos of things that she wasn't going to be able to save herself," Wise said. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Medical staff at Christus Spohn Hospital Alice led on a wild chase after a patient decided to run off in an ambulance, Alice Police Chief reports Around 2 p.m., Interim Alice Police Chief Ron Davis said that a Jim Wells County Deputy found an unresponsive man lying in a ditch out in the County. Chief Davis said the Deputy then called for an ambulance for the man and he was taken to Spohn Hospital in Alice. While the staff was trying to treat him, police say the man jumped up and took off running. A security guard chased him around the hospital's parking lot before the man got into a running ambulance. Moments later, the man ended up driving the ambulance into a telephone pole near Medical Boulevard. Witnesses say after the crash, the man ran several blocks before being found by police laying under a tree. He was then taken back to the hospital. He is expected to be transferred to Corpus Christi. KIII-TV3 SOUTH TEXAS Corsicana Fire Department welcomes home historic ladder truck In December 1929, the City of Corsicana purchased two pieces of fire apparatus from American LaFrance that "embody all the latest improvements in fire-fighting apparatus developed in recent years," as the Corsicana Semi-Weekly Light documented at the time. One of the trucks purchased that year was a 1929 Type 94 Service Ladder Truck. This apparatus was a true ladder truck, in that it carried the appropriate cache of ladders to the scene of an emergency. The apparatus recently resurfaced and has been fully restored to its original glory. Provenance for the truck was authenticated by the Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Antique Motor Fire Apparatus in America and the Peckham Fire Truck American LaFrance Database. Also, research from our library archives confirms the providence. "This is a historic day for us in the fire department, to be able to recapture a part of the history for the City of Corsicana is truly remarkable," Fire Chief Paul Henley stated. New York firefighters turn into crimefighters, take down man who allegedly assaulted 60-year-old woman VIDEO: Members of the FDNY jumped into action after witnessing a recent assault in Brooklyn right outside a fire station. CBS2's Jenna DeAngelis got a look at surveillance video on Sunday. The clip shows a woman in a blue shirt walking down the sidewalk on Hancock Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant when a man on a bicycle swerves over and punches her in the face, knocking her down. He speeds off as four people race behind him. The pursuers were firefighters and they continued the chase around a corner, and took the man to the ground. Meanwhile, others were seen checking on the 60-year-old victim. "It's bad. You can't hit a woman. She's very nice, the whole family. I grew up with them and they very nice," said Twin Alzokari of nearby J&A Deli and Grocery. Alzokari said he watched the FDNY jump into action after the assault on Aug. 26, which happened at around 5 p.m. right in front of the firehouse. WCBS-TV CBS 2 NEW YORK New Jersey firefighters rocking new sneakers gifted by movie star Dwayne Johnson VIDEO: The Ridgefield Volunteer Fire Department is rocking new footwear after movie star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson arranged for 100 pairs of his new signature sneakers to be delivered as a thank-you to the "badasses" who keep their community safe. The delivery of Under Armour Project Rock PR3 sneakers was presented on Aug. 27 at the Engine No. 2 station by Jillian Crane of the First Responders Children's Foundation, but was kept under wraps until The Rock posted a video announcement on Sunday. "Glad you (badasses) got my note," Johnson posted. "A very small way of us saying, THANK YOU to you guys and all our first responders across our country. I see you and we're grateful to you for always taking care of our families and communities. Stay safe, stay healthy. Love and respect - DJ." NORTHJERSEY.COM New Hampshire Mayor: Mask mandate should have opt-out for first responders When the City Council next meets, it will hold a third and final reading for a face-mask ordinance and Assistant Mayor Jim Splaine will propose a partial exemption for first responders. Splaine's proposed amendment includes the wording, "Exempted from the requirements of the ordinance requiring the wearing of face coverings include law enforcement personnel, first responders, or other workers actively engaged in their tasks if wearing a face covering may hinder their performance." The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention mask advisory doesn't include exemptions for first responders, and in neighboring Durham, where the student population could be compared to Portsmouth's tourist population, there is no exemption. Portsmouth police and fire officials explained their current mask protocols, which indicate little to nothing would change if Splaine's exemption is passed.
