2 firefighters injured in Dallas apartment fire expected to be OK, officials say Two firefighters were injured while trying to put out a fire at an apartment complex in North Dallas Monday afternoon, officials said. The firefighters are expected to be OK, Dallas Fire-Rescue said. Dallas Fire-Rescue units responded to a 911 call for a structure fire at about 4:39 p.m. at the Windridge on the Parkway Apartments at 14350 Dallas Parkway, just off the Dallas North Tollway. When firefighters got to the two-story apartment building, there was heavy fire coming from a first-floor apartment unit, said DFR Spokesperson Jason Evans. The fire was traveling up towards the balcony of the unit above. Firefighters deployed handlines and moved in. The fire was extinguished just after 6 p.m. No residents were injured but two firefighters had non-life-threatening injuries after being struck by falling debris from a balcony that collapsed during suppression efforts, Evans said. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Houston firefighter dies of COVID-19 at 39-years-old The Houston Fire Department is mourning the loss of one of their own. On Friday, 39-year-old Tanner Reed died after battling COVID-19. Reed was an engineer operator and 17-year HFD veteran. "[The Coronavirus] didn't have any mercy on Tanner to be honest with you," said HFD Captain Justin Cegielski. "It's very eye opening." Cegielski worked with Reed at the Houston Fire Department for the last several years. Cegielski describes Reed as a great father and fireman. "He was a great dad and a great family man," said Cegielski. "He's one of the best to ever walk through the doors of fire station number 10." According to Cegielski, COVID-19 hit the 39-year-old fireman hard. Cegielski didn't know whether or not Reed was vaccinated for COVID-19. Reed is the 4th HFD firefighter to die in the line-of-duty from the Coronavirus. KRIV-TV FOX 26 HOUSTON Follow Up: Firefighters frustrated after another structure destroyed, as construction delays continue at Dallas fire station Crews with Dallas Fire-Rescue started battling a 3-alarm fire Thursday night at a large inventory warehouse off of Harry Hines Boulevard, and didn't finish cleanup until late Friday night. The building, per Dallas Fire-Rescue, is a total loss. But firefighters told WFAA that the property could have been saved if a nearby station wasn't out-of-service. Just a few blocks from the fire sits Station 30. It's been closed for repairs since November 2019. The City discovered structural issues related to the building's foundation. The fire crew that used to call that building home now responds to calls out of Dallas Fire Station 35 at 3839 Walnut Hill Lane. That location is almost three miles away. Station 35 wasn't the first crew on scene Thursday night, however. Station 43 had to respond, which is nearly the same distance from the area. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Mission's fire department approved to buy their first ambulance The Mission Fire Department is taking steps towards becoming mission's secondary emergency medical service (EMS) provider after getting approval from the city to purchase an ambulance. "We all help each other out all the agencies you know the need is there the only thing is at times there is a delay and that is one of the main purposes of this is to minimize delay," said Gilbert Sanchez, the Fire Chief of Mission's Fire Department. Sanchez said the need for ambulance providers has risen due to COVID and said there has been a time when there has not been enough available. "COVID patients obviously has increased and we obviously reached the ultimate peak about a year ago," said Sanchez. The fire department received funding from the American Rescue Plan that requires them to buy not rent an ambulance. KVEO-TV NBC 23 BROWNSVILLE Police: 2 adults, 2 children found shot to death at scene of house fire in southwest Houston Two adults and two children were found shot to death Sunday at the scene of a house fire in southwest Houston. HPD Chief Troy Finner said he doesn't believe it was a random act because there was no forced entry into the home. He said he thinks it's a domestic violence incident. "That's normal ... what some suspects do. They try to destroy evidence and whatnot by setting a fire but I don't think that it worked to their benefit right now," Finner said. Police said they're looking for a suspect or suspects, though no details were immediately given. The Houston Fire Department got the call shortly after 8 a.m. in the 7500 block of Imogene, which is near Bissonnet and Fondren. Finner said firefighters were able to put the fire out quickly, but when they started to search the home, they found two adults and two children dead with gunshot wounds. The tradition was started by current Chief Mike Passarelli, who was the battalion chief at the time, and firefighters Jeff Quick and Tom Kilway. KATC-TV ABC/CW+ 3 LAFAYETTE Washington fire & rescue introduces department's first all-female crew For the first time in Graham Fire & Rescue's history, the department has an all-female crew. "It can be a challenge to really have women even be interested in the fire service," said Graham Fire & Rescue Lieutenant Jill D'Len. "Not a lot of women think that it's a career that they can possibly pursue. So that's why we're here, to show women you can do anything." The group of five women staffs the ambulance and the fire engine at one of the department's five stations. "There's a lot of hard work, a lot of time and practice in researching to be a firefighter, but we are here to say you can absolutely do it," said D'Len. The crew was brought together because of Georgia Daniels, a veteran of the department who plans to retire at the end of September. KING-TV NBC 5 SEATTLE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
